old school Hammett effects

Thinking a lot lately about the master of puppets and ride the lightning kind of sound...wondering if anyone knows the effects chain he used back then. I googled for about 3 minutes then got fed up...

Most concerned with where he placed his wah in the chain.

Any help will be appreciated thanks.

Re: old school Hammett effects

For the most part, back in the day all he used was a Tubescreamer and Crybaby straight into the amps- which were Marshalls and later Mesa Boogie. The Chorus cleans are a Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amp.

Later, around And Justice for All, he was endorsing and presumably using an ADA MP-1 preamp.

The last few albums he's been adding and experimenting with all kinds of effects, though they never seem to make the final cut to the albums

Re: old school Hammett effects

A JC 120 = Boss Chorus in the loop.

No doubt there was some tight delay in the mix. SHort time, low level.

Re: old school Hammett effects

^^^Yeah, it gets old after a while like Zack Wilde's pinch harmonics

Re: old school Hammett effects

Not trying to turn this into a hammett hate flame thread please, but someone has to know..

distortion then wah?
or wah then distortion?

anybody know?

Re: old school Hammett effects

Try both maybe, and see which sounds most like him?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Distortion then Wah gives an extreme Wah effect, which, back in high school, I though sounded like Hammet. This was in the Black album Enter Sandman days. However, Hammet was using the remote wah at that point, which you could customize to make more extreme- and those settings are now found in his signature wah.

The preferred method is wah then distortion

Re: old school Hammett effects

If Monty Jays Metallica gear website www.montyjay.com hadn't exceeded bandwidth you'd might be able to find out there. Doubt you get the signal chain order info though.

Listening to his tone on Kill / Ride, I'm guessing that he had the wah first.

Regarding clean sounds, both used the clean channel on their Mark IIs until the Justice era when James switched to JC-120s and Kirk started using ADA MP-1s.

Re: old school Hammett effects

There may be some footage showing Hammett's early pedal layout on Cliff 'em All... dunno about Justice era, though.
