Old School "Miracle Cloth" = "Gorgomyte" = Best Fret Restorer EVER!

I've been extremely impressed with the "Gorgomyte" cloths sold by JJ's and licensed by GHS. The ease at which they bring nasty, rough and tarnished frets and dingy fingerboards to mirror-like sexiness is unreal.

If you've never cleaned your tarnished, grungy frets with one of these cloths, you are missing out!

Here's the best part... after some research, I decided to try the classic "Miracle Cloth" and I'm pleased to confirm it's really the same great stuff as the name-brand "Gorgomyte" cloth, only less expensive and more readily available! A single cloth will do many guitars or one guitar many times. Simply cut the cloth into small 2" squares and store in a Zip-Loc bag to keep them fresh.

I've used these on Rosewood, Ebony and finished Maple boards with incredible results! The boards look so renewed afterward and the frets are gleaming after just 5 minutes or so of effort. I wish everything in life was as easy!

I just restored a maple-necked 1980's era Strat copy tonight. The board and frets look better than new! Still a bit hesitant to try it on an unfinished Maple board, but I can't recommend these enough for 99% of guitarists out there.

Truly the industry's best kept secret :)

I use a felt block from Rockler with auto buffing compound. It smooths out most fretwear.

I've found that most guitar maintenance materials are 100% marked up versions of something else I can buy cheap. I guess they assume musicians are used to being ripped off.

I'll have to try that stuff. And maybe I should start marketing Murphy's Oil Soap as Tolex Cleaner for $20. :fingersx:

The Gorgomyte/Miracle Cloth doesn't remove enough material to reshape the frets, so there are certainly better methods for remedying noticeable fretwear, as you mentioned.

However, it does bring them to an incredible shine and smoothness with minimal elbow grease and bends afterwards are utterly delicious!

yup stuff works great

I've never seen this. How does it compare with taping off the fretboard (and pickups) and using really fine steel wool on each fret, one at a time? Aside from not taking nearly as long.

Where can one find this? Old school hardware store?

Brilliant!

It's way easier & as/more effective...been using it for years...nothing else comes close imo.. :bigthumb:

My favorite example is Big Bends Nut Sauce. I can pay $20 for a tiny tube of that stuff, or $4 for a giant tube of PTFE gel lube from the hardware store. I'm not 100% sure they're identical, but they look the same and work pretty much identically.

I may have to try this one day...but my $12 pack of 0000 steel wool has lasted me about 3 years so far and I'm about half way through one of the 6 bunches (pads?). So if I continue on this trend that's about $0.33 a year on fret conditioning materials.

I'm spending a lot more on painter's tape.

Is it abrasive? Do I have to worry about the fretboard wood?

Good point. However, 2 strips at 3" each to do a whole guitar...unless you are taping all them off beforehand, is still cheap

Re: Old School "Miracle Cloth" = "Gorgomyte" = Best Fret Restorer EVER!

Advantages of the Gorgomyte: One cloth does many guitars, no fine metal shavings, no masking, super fast (1/10th the time involved with steel wool), great results, renews the fretboard at the same time!

You don't need to protect inlays or binding and it is safe for most fingerboard woods and finishes (I'd avoid raw maple boards, but I've used it on guitars with finished maple boards with great results!).

I will say that one should be careful using it on hardware. I tested the Gorgomyte on a set of tarnished import gold pickups and it rubbed the thin gold finish off, so I recommend sticking to the frets/fingerboard with this stuff.
