Hiya guys, this is for those that have a box of old Guitar Player mags around (and a scanner!):

I am looking for an old Frank Gambale article on modes, and as far as I know, it is either in Feb. '89 issue, Nov. '89 or Nov. '91 issue. In this article, he explained the modes with some sample progressions, (like for Dorian, it was a Dm7/C chord, and stuff like that). If you have em and can help me out, my students and I would really appreciate it! This article was the best explaination of modes that I had seen, and unfortunately I lost track of my copy.

ps - what is the best resolution to scan with so as to minimize filesize, but retain excellent readability?

try scanning at least at 300 dpi, then edit in Photoshop (if you have it) - save as a JPEG (most scanners make .tiff's), med. quality, and check for legibility

hmmm .. my scanner turned them into .pdf files .. 4 pages, about 3 MB each ...

is there any way to convert them out of .pdf into a smaller format?

you should have an option of which format it scans to, so if you can do that, I'd chose tiff or jpeg, then edit the size as above

if that's a problem, maybe you can just email the pdf's, if Mincer has a fast connection

happy to help, friend ... now, any tips on how to use the mixolydian mode more musically? ... and example of a well known piece featuring it ... a chord progression to use it over ... anything?

the mixolydian mode is used over dominant 7th chords...because it is a major chord with a b7 note added.
so here are 2 progressions A7-D-Em-A7 (key of D major, but starting from A)
or D7-Em-Am-D7 (key of G major but starting on D)

do *not* be tempted to use a minor 3rd in these-a C in the first progression, an F in the 2nd- you will ruin that 'mixolydian' sound. Most people would use the pentatonic scale over these chords, but technically it is wrong. Try substituting this mode over standard blues progressions- it sounds 'sweeter' with the major 3rd in there.
