Omega Screw Swap

noisy humbucker

Contemplating a screw swap for the Omega in my black korina Jazzmaster. I appreciate that the pickup doesn’t have any “ice-picky” qualities and that it’s got a solid attack for palm muting, but I feel like it could use a little extra warmth. Maybe longer and/or fillister head screws?

Thanks!

More iron (longer screws) can increase the inductance. That can warn up the tone. But screws that extend past the bottom of the pickup also weaken the field at the top. But this might also soften the top end.

A larger change would be lower carbon steel. Most screws, especially hex head screws, are fairly hard steel, i.e., high carbon content. More carbon general equals a brighter tone.

I find that “warmth” often means lack of articulation. I like bright pickups, especially bright humbuckers. Too much low end takes space away from the bass and drums.

Re: Omega Screw Swap

How about swapping one row of hex screws with slugs? I guess I’m looking for the best of both worlds - modern attack and clarity with a rounder old school tone (if such a thing even exists).

As an Alpha/Omega owner, if that's the tone you're looking for, they probably aren't the right pickups for you. I love them to death, but any vintage or less modern tone is not really their wheelhouse at all. I doubt that changing the pole pieces would fix that much; it's the overall voicing of the pickups that's gonna make that tougher. You probably want something more akin to the BKP Juggernauts (which have alnico and alnico/cermaic magnets for the neck and bridge) if that's what you're looking for. The Juggs are still very modern, but can definitely achieve what you're looking for more easily than the A/O set.

Re: Omega Screw Swap

I tried the Juggernauts (albeit it a different guitar) and they definitely weren’t for me. Thanks for the input though. What I’d really like to try if the funds were there is the Custom, but I fear that I’d get the ice-pick effect (stupid tinnitus).

custom is bright but more controlled in the highs and high mids than a distortion or a jb
