I am going thru my records to see what else I need to put up for sale to pay some bills. I counted up the guitars Ive flipped over the last few years on my quest and I counted 42... 42!!!! Oh my!! Thats just since I started keeping track.. The good news is Ive finally found what I really like... It just blew my mind tho... In hindsight, there are a few Id LOVE to have back..

Anyone else change guitars like undies??

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

I was there 10 years ago and quit trying to find the dumpster dive, bargain basement gems. I started buying high end guitar shay blew me away. I just bought them a LOT less frequently.

I get a little too attached.

+1 on this. I drive cars into the ground and will do the same with guitars. I only have 1 working electric, 1 bass and an acoustic right now and will probably not get much farther than 2 of each, with the acoustic being something odd like a bass or bouzouki.

Hey BloodRose, Serious question, what is the one you really like? I also have been through many guitars over the years looking for that magic one. I've seen may of the axes you've posted here and I am curious where you ended up on this journey.

Well, Ill be honest and say Im not a one woman (er, guitar) man, but I have 2 Charvels and my Les Paul Trad Pro. I love the trad pro more than any of the Lps Ive owned in the past, including most Ive ever played. It just has soul. And my 2 Charvels. LOVE those necks! And honestly, if I HAD to pick one, it would be the Japanse Pro mod. The neck is alittle more narrow.

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

I've been deep in the gear game, with guitars, amps, effects, mics, pickups, speakers, tubes, etc. I've come close to the end of the madness with my favorite Gibsons, Fenders, PRS, and Martin for guitars.......and many of them have great stories. For amps, I'm all about definitive classics, and boutiques that kill everything. For FX, classics and boutiques that are modern classics.

Seriously, I've owned around 120 guitars, 90 amps, and well over 100 pedals. I used it as I moved it around. It wasn't always money out of pocket....just wheelin and dealin. But there's a point where you can't sell it willingly because you bond with it. Those are the ones to keep.

I guess what I'm saying is "I know what I like by trying it all." Gear isn't created equal. There's some stuff that just kicks complete ass. When you put it all through a sifter, you end up with some really sweet pieces.

Since I sold off most of mine over the past 2 years and kept a few keepers, bought my ultimate guitar I haven't had any GUITAR GAS and all my remaining few get gigged. However amps are another story..... I want a Friedman BE100 and a blackface Bassman!

The difference between women and guitars is that guitars don't get jealous when you have more than one.

I like to joke with this bit of truth, Some guys have a Hot Rod, or boat, or even an ex-wife or three, me, I got a ton of guitars. :fing2: :dunno: :cool2:

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

I buy cheap crap for fun, and guitars that speak to me.

I dumped most of my crap a long time ago.

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

prolly not,but maybe close...

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

d1dsj, yeah, Id LOVE to have a Friedman BE too!! Amazing! One of the big reasons I went on such a tear was after I got married, I had to hock all my gear to support my family. I didnt have not one guitar for 11 years. And the only 2 reasons I was able to go that nuts at that point a few years back is that I was working 3 jobs and guitars like Japanese model series charvels were selling really cheap. In some cases I was able to buy cheap and turn a small profit, which allowed me more purchases. Now, Im financially strapped and need to sell a bunch and the market is bad so Im losing a pile on everything I have to move.
The one really good thing to all that gear flipping, is it allowed me to try a BUNCH of stuff I wouldnt have been able to before, so I was able to find what really works for me. So, that was a huge plus! I ended up liking things that I wouldnt have thought I would before, and some of the ones I thought Id LOVE, didnt work out. For example, one of my dream guitars has always been a Jackson soloist. I LOVE those.. However, the necks are just alittle too wide for my comfort. I was able to learn this cuz I had a Charvel model 5 once.. So, now I still love the soloists, but know it wont be a perfect fit for me..

I doubt I've played 42 different chords.

Re: OMG! Did I really??? A gear addict's confession...

Being a lefty, you hardly get to see a lot of guitars, let alone buying/selling them....and most of them in stores are cheapies. I started with the usual array of lower level models, but after playing a few nice ones the lower level just didn't have the depth of tone I wanted.

I've bought and sold many more pedals than guitars, but certainly I've sold about 6 guitars in the last 12 months or so (I had about 15 before selling). I've now moved into making guitars, mainly as there just aren't the ones around (or produced) that I want to buy.
