I'd rather have this setup. 
MM pickup in the bridge, P-bass pickup in the usual spot. Rather than concentric volume/tones or adding a pot, I'd wire it with 2 volumes.

I modded the crap out of my first bass, a Johnson P-bass. Pickups, bridge, electronics.
The last two I bought are still stock.
But I figure that getting an Ibanez 690EX for less than two bills makes it worth it.
I still may throw a set of Duncan's in my Jackson 5 string.
