While it's true that music, literature, etc. often cater to the lowest common denominator, we are talking about businesses. You can have the absolute greatest technical musical composition in the world but if it doesn't appeal to the masses, it won't sell. If it won't sell no one wants to get behind it.

In the case of literature someone like Stephen King sells books and movies with his name. Someone way back when saw Carrie as a really cool story, took a chance on him and he followed up with Salems Lot, the Shining, etc that all had commercial appeal and of course became movies later. Once he made a name for himself I personally think he got pretentious and some books sold on his name alone.
