One dead coil /really high resistance?

Hey guys,

Just picked up a 4 cond. 80's DDJ. Unfortunately it looks like a dead coil but hopefully you guys have a save. I used the multimeter white/red together and test across green/bare to black. reads in the megaohm rage and is unstable. When i check coil by coil I get red/white: 8.xk, green/bare&red:megaohms/unstable.

Could there be an easy fix here?

Thanks!

Re: One dead coil /really high resistance?

isolate the bare wire from everything thats a ground for the baseplate

check black/white and red/green.

once you know you have a dead coil you can CAREFULLY look at that coil to see if you can find the break

Awesome, thanks!

Checked direct red to green without the bare and depending on when i test it ranges from .4M to 1.5M

I'm afraid to start touching things before the seller gets back to me about whether he'll make it right. From these it definitely sounds like a break somewhere in the coil? Which then means that it's rewind or paperweight...?

There is a third way.

Identify which coil on your DD humbucker is shorted. Remove that coil. Replace it with a stud coil from a vintage output humbucker. DIY hybrid humbucker à la Custom/'59.

Re: One dead coil /really high resistance?

Lol hmm.... Pickup surgery might be the way. Would something like a 490t at 8k work?

Re: One dead coil /really high resistance?

I am suggesting a deliberate coil imbalance. The 8k DD coil plus a second coil in the region of 4 - 6k. Going to want a DP3T series/single/parallel coils mode switch.

Good stuff... Hopefully this guy stands up behind it. If not guess I'll give it a shot....

Re: One dead coil /really high resistance?

Now here comes the funny part. Reading in the mega ohms doesn't mean that the pickup doesn't work properly.
Just try it in a guitar...

I would think that could only be true if your multimeter needed replacing.
