One of *THOSE* finds - need pickup advice

Found a 72-73 jazz bass with likely original case at a thrift store (goodwill) in L.A. ($499.99 - so they priced it good, but not one of those hundred dollar finds!) Pretty well used, but still decent shape ("relic"?) Anyway, it appears to have had the original pickups removed, and dimarzio's added (beige with adjustable allen head pole pieces) Any suggestions as to a pickup that would approximate stock sound? Tried calling the Duncan factory (customer service line) 2 days in a row - was "second in the cue", then "first in the cue", then the phone rang and went to VOIP voicemail with no return call :33: , so i figured i'd try here.

Thanks for any help or thoughts you have.

What's wrong with the Dimarzios?

Vintage jazz bass?? Or if you want it relicd, Antiquity 2 jazz bass. Or more relicd, Antiquity jazz bass.

My Jazz Bass (a '72 Ibanez copy of the '71 Fender) has a Hi-A in bridge position and one of those DiMarzios in bass position. Put them there in the 70s and never thought about changing 'em. They sound great to me, even though the DiMarzio is kinda fugly. But I've had plenty of time to get used to them.

Congrats! Do you regularly go to thrift stores, pawn shops, garage sales to find gems like this or was it pure luck?

Don't want to derail the thread but every time I hear something like this I wonder if it's pure luck or effort :)

Re: One of *THOSE* finds - need pickup advice

antiquity II jazz bass is the classic fender jazz bass tone

Re: One of *THOSE* finds - need pickup advice

I agree. The Antiquity II Jazz Bass is probably the closest you can get to an early 70s sound..really, late 60s, which was better than the 70s anyway!

No worries for the "derail" - I hit the pawnshops, thrift stores and yard sales regularly (first time i've found something like this one at a thrift store!) Normally to add to my Starbucks coffee mug collection, or other household items. Pawnshops, i help them with their computer systems, and ones that are forfeited. And also buy computers there - have never bought a new computer myself. Also look for tools and such. Found a John Petrucci musicman guitar at one once - $380 with case. (not the one with the piezo bridge, though) Best find - mint condition basically unplayed '71 Jazz Bass with all case candy and original pickup covers in place including bridge cover with mute foam. Original flatwounds and everything. $385 (about 15 years ago, before everyone was 'net savvy) 1965 Deluxe Reverb at another, back in the day. ($375) Really a combination of persistence, and luck. (sometimes persistence makes it's own luck!) There are lots of visits with nothing found.

The thrift store where i found this usually has decent stuff, but overpriced. (beat up ibanez's for $299 - that sort of thing) This one - I dropped by the day that it came out. (according to the date on the tag.) Pure luck.

Thanks! Finds like this one gives me hope, I may start making it a habit to check them out :)
