Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

I know that it's fairly normal to have a blue glow from your power tubes, but is it an indication of a mismatched set to have only 1 with a blue glow?

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

Thanks GB, these tubes should only be a few months old but it may be another reason why the Valvekings are so inexpensive.

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

Is it arcing? (bad) or just a sort of blue shroud around the envelope? (not bad). I assume you bought a matched quad---are they matched under actual operating conditons in the amp? (two different things).

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

These are the stock pair of Sovtec 6l6wxt's in the Valveking, who knows if they were matched properly in China? No arching, just a shroud of blue haze that would increase with the power draw. My only concern was because only one was doing this. I also don't really know how to check voltage values while it's on. I work with allot of high voltage wiring, but just plain don't know what to do with an amp and don't think that I should attemp it without supervision of an amp tech.

For what it's worth the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ tubes that come in the Valveking are notorious for not being closely matched. Someone over at HC measured about 10 mA difference in their pair. I yanked them out of my Valveking as soon as I got another pair to put in the amp. Got some JJ's in there now and it is a major improvement. Gonna try some SED 6L6's this week.

I love that tube glow.

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

Well, I got an email back from Peavey and here's what they had to say about the fixed bias:

"The fixed bias voltage is (-)55 volts. It uses Sovtek 6L6WXT power
tubes. You may use any 6L6 tube, however."

What does this mean? Specifically the (-)55volts?

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

I've found that the older tubes get, the more they glow blue. When you pop in a new set, they don't glow quite as bright. Companies like Peavey use the best tubes they can get for the least amount of money, so it might be a good time to get a set of JJ's or SED's, and keep the stock ones as backups.

That's just what I was thinking of doing. Though I think that I may try out the TAD long bottle for about 4 bucks more than the SED's. Do you think that there would really be a noticable difference?

I don't have experience with TAD's, but I know that the small bottled ones are great for lowering the volume and headroom of Fender style amps.

Re: Only 1 of a pair of 6l6's has blue glow.....

I went with the long bottle just for that reason, this little amp has a buttload of gain and I'm trying to tame it as much as I can. I've read that the long bottle has a bit more headroom than the other. I also ordered a JJ 6v6 for the Silvertone as it was starting to sound like it was playing through a blanket.

From The Tube Store:

[FONT=arial, helvetica]The TAD 6L6GC-STR is the perfect choice for the tone of the rock legends. The new 6L6GC-STR has a tight low end and has all the guts and bite to perfectly accomplish all the rocking sounds from SRV to modern NU-Metal. They have powerful deep bass and a clear, airy top end.

This TAD 6L6GC-STR combines the famous reliability of the American made Philips/Sylvania STR series, and the beefed-up black-plate system of the highly regarded vintage RCA 6L6GC tubes. The best of both worlds! Silky top end combined with deep bass response and lots of headroom make this tube a living classic.

The TAD 6L6GC-STR has an exclusive black-plate design, gold gird wire, double getter construction, no-noise filaments, and a 1.2mm thick heavy duty glass envelope.
