Only what's needed: new rig

I used to get so caught up in the gear game. Latest fad, I needed it. Never content with what I had. Always searching for something more. I went through numerous amps, cabs, pedal boards and even guitars.

At one point I think I was more concerned with the name on the instrument than actual tone. Which is a shame. It's a trap we all fell into at one point in time. I owned fryette, mesa, marshall, randall rm, peavey, etc. They all were very cool amps but didn't fit my needs, style, music and taste. Advertising suckered me in. Big time.

Maybe I'm maturing? Maybe fiscally responsibility is setting in. Maybe I don't care anymore. I was always jealous of those who owned amps for years on end. Who were satisfied. Never understood it. I wanted to play everything. Now maybe I do.

I took over a year hiatus from music. Looking to get back to writing original music and gigging. I just sold my mesa rectoverb series 2 combo for less than market value. It happens and purchased a new rig for under $900. I know I will love the head and cab (already familiar with it), not sure on the speaker though. That's a cheap fix in comparison though.

The cab is a 1x12. Never needed anything bigger for the gigs I played. Could always rent a bigger cab if needed. Less to carry. The head I got used.

Should have the head and cab within 1-2 weeks. The waiting game begins. End rant.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I'm glad to hear you're getting back in the swing of things. I have so much freakin' gear that I can barely use it all so I totally get where you're coming from. When you have the bare essentials you focus more on playing your instrument than worrying about which pedals work best for altering your sound.

Lately I've been playing an Epi LP Junior with a JB through a Bass Big Muff and a small 5w tube amp.

Its really nice to be able to just plug in and let it rip. It heightens your creativity.

What did you purchase, dare I ask?

I have the same problem but with pedals. I'm content with my 2 guitars and 1 amp, but I'm just not satisfied with pedals. To be more specific, dirt pedals. I've bought and sold about 10 so far but I'm feeling the urge to pick up a couple more. I just ordered 3 and I'm researching more. Going crazy! It's good to see there is a light at the end of the tunnel lol. Hopefully I'm there soon

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I'll post a stock photo up tomorrow. Attempting to post pics and/or YouTube via phone is ridiculous

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I also stripped down my pedal board. Got a tc nova system for my effects. Still need to pick up a footswitch for it though. Also need a good tuner, Erie ball volume, full tone fat boost, maybe a cheap od, maybe wah and an actual board then I'm set

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I look foreword to being able.to say that's it

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I honestly hope I can stay satisfied. Not going lie I still have some snobbery left in me. I did buy name brand equipment. Maybe it's a stigmata I have but I can't accept epiphones, blackstar, jet city, etc for some reason. I know they put out some killer products but I can't trust them. They're just not for me. My amp is a brand name company but not well known but they are known if that makes sense. What I mean is they don't get as much publicity as they should or they deserve. Nor do they get as much play from musicians. Could be niche market or that they're not typically sold through major retailers.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

This gets worse if you start modding your gear...

I've tried all kinds of things... and now I'm at a point where all I want is a one-piece swamp ash telecaster with a tummy cut and a forearm contour, a 1" c-shape transitioning to asymmetrical contour (around the 9th fret) neck with a 7.25-12" compound radius, kingwood/maple of course, gotoh vintage locking tuners, vintage ashtray style string-through bridge with 3 brass saddles and a compensated d/g barrell, a flipped (slug coil towards neck) and tapped (again slug coil) neck humbucker with an alnico 4 bar magnet and .187x.500" alnico 3 rods under the EAD strings, with a tapped '63 tele bridge pickup, and deluxe style wiring but with an angled blade switch instead of the gibby-style toggle switch. Located in the same place it is on the strat and tele, angled and just below the bridge pickup. That's all I'm asking for...

Don't even get me started on what I want my amplifier and pedalboard setup to be... Okay well since you insist...

I want a 50w 2 x EL-34 amp with the preamp section from a 1974x but with solid state rectification and a sag resistor... So 4 tubes total, 50w, one volume and one tone.

I want a hybrid boost/OD pedal based on kind of a combination between the EP preamp and the jfet vulcan... entirely transistor based running at 24v internally and using carbon comp resistors in the signal path. The idea is that it's an always-on pedal with a footswitchable volume/eq "solo" section. Thing is apparently (from what I've read) you need to eq a distortion pedal differently than a clean boost so it would look more like the analogman KoT in terms of how the pedal eqs the incoming guitar signal vs. the ep preamp.

That is all.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

People can be so queer about gear.

Just play what sounds good. It's not any more complicated than that.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I'll be relatively happy with a mustang v and a pod HD. I'll be wanting toobz ompz too, but it'll be a collection thing and not a toanzzzzz thing. A couple Orange terrors, a Hovercraft and a few Carvins.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

Since I don't have actual pics, I'll post a couple stock. First off here is the speaker I chose from my 1x12 cab.

Celestion G12H-75 Creamback

This celestion delivers 75-watts of power handling with ease and has unmistakable G12H tone, with a tighter low end than the G12M-65 Creamback and a punchier, more dynamic high end. The H magnet brings additional focus, body and girth to the Creamback tone. It thickens single notes, resulting in a highly articulate, vocal character. These additional characteristics mean that the G12H-75 Creamback offers exceptional performance when used for lead guitar and sounds massive loaded into a 4x12 cab!

Back in the late 60s, the G12H was created by fixing an 'H' type (heavy) magnet to the body of a G12M guitar speaker. Result: a speaker with more power and a different tonal balance: firmer bass and a more pronounced top end. So we added an 'H' magnet to the G12M-65 Creamback, create a speaker that delivers the sonic signature of a G12H combined with Creamback levels of power handling. The result is the G12H-75 Creamback. It delivers 75-watts of power handling with ease and has unmistakeable G12H tone, with a tighter low end than the G12M-65 Creamback and a punchier, more dynamic high end. The H magnet brings additional focus, body and girth to the Creamback tone. It thickens single notes, resulting in a highly articulate, vocal character.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

I never got a chance to try one of these out, so I am hesitant/nervous. I wanted to try out something different. Already had a Vintage 30 (British and Chinese) and a Classic Lead 80, so I wanted something slightly different but still had the necessary wattage/output.

A Mustang AND a POD? That's like buying a coke and a Pepsi at the same time. You should get the Mustang floor unit and run it into a micro Terror with a PPC112.

Mustang for the guitar, pod for bass and voice, as well as delay/reverb box for the tube amps.

Re: Only what's needed: new rig

So I should be getting my new head within 1-2 days, but the cab won't arrive until next week.....

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU....

Sucks I have to wait longer to test out the head (purchased used), but oh well. Stoked for the new rig. Cab is custom made. Few people out there will have the same color scheme as I do. Here's a stock image of it. Few differences.... Logo is gold instead of white and is recessed/engraved.

g112 vintage black burg.jpg

Since the color scheme is VERY close to my amp, what did I get?
