Oooooh, 61 or 62 Gibson Melody Maker project on eBay

I just saw this. Rough, and in need of some lovin', but if someone has been gassing for an old Gibson, this could fill the void. I'm sure some of you can post whether this is a guitar worth restoring or not. I know it was a lower end Gibson back then and my guitar teacher back in 1980 had one that played really nice, but other than that, I don't know squat about them. Sweet. Hey, if someone on the forum scores this guitar, post and let us know!

Well, seeing as its vintage/originality value is already out of the window, that guitar can safely be considered a rebuild/refinish project. You have nothing to lose by getting it routed to take a Soapbar P90. The result would lie somewhere between the Junior LP and SG models. :D

I once owned a Gordon-Smith GS-1. (A UK-built instrument based heavily on the singlecut Melody Maker.) I installed a Kent Armstrong Hot Dogear P90 on mine. It was a cracker. Stupidly, I sold that guitar to a friend. He steadfastly refuses to sell it back to me. Go figure.

What's the point? It is probably going to go for $200. Then youhave to strip it, fill it, prime it, paint it, get new electronics and tuners and bridge. Your at $500 by the time your done.

Not worth it IMO.

I think it depends on what you're looking for. I love old beat up guitars, so I'd probably just leave it that way. Plus, having a Gibson from the early sixties is a big turn on. Sure, it's a HUGE piece of crap, I realize that, ha ha. I just fell in love with it. Like funkfingers said, it's a great guitar to route, mod, do whatever, and you still have a bit o' history. I wouldn't be surprised if that auction ended at close to five bills. I wouldn't pay anywhere near that. If I wasn't flat broke, I think two fitty would be my limit, but people start going nuts bidding, then they get outbid, then they get pissed cuz they got outbid and bid higher than they wanted to, then the guy they outbid gets pissed and bids higher, and so on, and so on.

man, I so want that, if only I could afford it, it would be a fun project. I'd probably route it for a tele pickup in the bridge and wire it up like an esquire.

definitely not worth $440...maybe $50-100 at most. For the price that person got it they could buy a Melody Maker Reissue and be done with it.

And I thought I was crazy thinking if I had cash, I'd pay $250 at the very most! Granted, I like it, it's cool (imo), it's a piece of old time wood...but $440? Can you imagine what it would have sold for if we weren't in a huge recession? The old saying sure is right; one man's junk is another man's gold.
