open coil

How does the wiring under the tape correlate to the hookup wiring diagram on the SD web site.
B=hot, G=ground, tie R&W.
I don't know what SD model this is (no sticker). This is the bridge, the neck is a '59'.
The person who sold this to a friend quite awhile ago didn't disclose that the bridge was wires as a single coil because
the other coil is open. Measured a little over 4K at the output.
I was hoping the wires in the picture were twisted together but not soldered
as I've seen that once before with an Ibanez Super 58.
How hard is it to repair these.

Re: open coil

The wireing is always the same Red and white together and soldered, green to ground and black hot. Is that Black and green Soldered together .. that is wrong IMO.

Re: open coil

The green and black are soldered together at the pickup under the tape, not in the control cavity.
The picture shows what's under the tape at the pickup. Like it came out of the factory like this.
Found 4 sets of wire after removing more tape.
White to White, Black to Black, White to Red, Black to Green.

Re: open coil

From what I can see the wiring looks correct.

Green is the screw coil start and is hooked to the black wire on the screw coil. Which is correct.

Red is the screw coil finish and is hooked up to the white wire on the screw coil. Also correct.

Then white and white and black and black go together on the slug coil. Also correct.

So it could be a dead coil or the coil wire could have been broken from the lead wire. I've had that happen. All that would need to happen is the tape needs to be taken off the suspected dead coil and check the connection from the coil wire(s) to the lead wires. If there is a bad connection the coil wire would just need to be resoldered onto the lead wire. If not then chances are you've got a coil that is deader than Elvis and would need a rewind.

I gingerly removed the tape with no success. The south coil is dead. That why the seller taped red and green together and soldered the white to ground.
It's on an old Burny Les Paul. My friend got it from Japan 10 years ago. I'll look for a beat up looking used pickup to match the looks of the '59'.
All the screw show rust of some sort.
P.S. Burny really nailed the neck profile of the 50's Gibson's. Thick and round if you like that type of neck.
Good learning experience taking the pickup apart though.
Thanks for the help.

Well that kinda sucks. Oh well that's how it goes sometimes. I'm just glad I could help a bit with the wiring aspect. I've never heard of Burny before how does it hold up against a real Gibson? If you need it rewound I'd be happy to do it for you!

If you close your eyes you can't tell the difference. I always thought blind people should judge the sound and feel for a guitar to remove the prejudice.
Thanks for the offer. What would it cost?

I'll send you a Pm.

Re: open coil

If the south coil is dead, check to see if it is just due to the lead wire coming off of one of the bobbin wires. Though the coil wire is hair thin, it is possible to re solder the lead to the coil wire.
