Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

What do you all think of pickups in the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass? I am looking for a growly and grinding rock tone, not so much a round / burpy / farty tone.

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

Yep, they're great. The new ones have the custom shop 60s pickups in them stock. Pick the strings by the bridge and dig in for the growl after setting your eq right.

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

How about the pickups that were used just prior to the Custom Shop 60s?

Thanks, Falloffthebonetone! I'm guessing that the pre-CS 60s pickups are probably a little tighter in the lows with the mid emphasis shifted lower. Would that be accurate?

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

My '90 American Standard Jazz Bass was bought used completely stock. Aside from the pickups being a bit noisy and low output (probably standard output but I was use to my P-Bass's Quarter Pounder output), the pickups sounded fine. Not being one to keep anything stock, I swapped the factory PUPs out for J-Bass Quarter Pounders. I like the difference. They can do all the warm J-Bass stuff with a little blending and tone pot manipulation, but they can also closely approximate that punk/rock grind if I want them too. I prefer my P-Bass both for tone and overall feel of playing, but I am a P-Bass guy. YMMV.

I haven't tried any other PUPs because the Quarter Pounders give me the tone I want.

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

I just discovered another Fender pickup that I didn't know about...the '75 Reissue. Anybody have experience with these? How do they compare to the Custom Shop 60's?

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

Hmm. They are both nice in their own ways. I think the '70s pickups cut through the mix better more often, but they both get lost in some portions of the song.

Re: Opinions...Fender American Standard Jazz Bass pickups

No one mentioned these and they are probably mostly overlooked, but I had a set put in my J bass and a treble bleed: the Fender Noiseless J Bass pickups. They sound really great, more so than most would think.

Fender now has two other noiseless J bass sets available. The Super 55 noiseless J bass set shown here, no affln., http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/fender-super-55-split-coil-jazz-bass-pickup-set
and the Fender N3 Noiseless J Bass pickup set shown here http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/fender-n3-noiseless-jazz-bass-pickups-set-of-2

I like the fact that the ones I have are quiet when used singly. These newer ones are probably even better sounding. I believe the N3's are used in the American Deluxe J Bass.
