So I'm thinking about building a large 4 foot cube to record my various cabs in and not completely shake the house and disturb the neighbers. Would be made as two halves, with two latches per side to secure the halves. Maybe some rubber/foam rubber where the halves meet to act as a gasket. Plywood or particle board as the "skin". Probably just thick particle board, because inside would be foam rubber (egg carton style?) to soak up the volume, as well as to try to minimize the sound waves bouncing around inside there. Inside floor would be some sort of carpet instead of foam rubber. Cab would sit on back half, with the front half being where the mic(s) would reside. Female 1/4" jacks on the upper inside and outside of the back half, so I could have the head sitting on top of the box, plugged into the back of the box, and then a separate speaker cable on the inside running to the cab. Very large casters on the bottom of both halves. The entire premise of making two halves is so I can move this large box through doors. Plus, then it'd be easy to get the cab inside there and make a "door" unnecessary. Maybe even through some sort of removeable small panel up high on the front panel in case I wanted to hear a small amount of sound coming out. Frame would likely be 2X2s. Had considered 2X4s, but I think that'd be overkill. And 2X2s would leave more room on the inside. Maybe I wouldn't even need 2X2s, and could use some sort of angle-iron on the outside as the frame. That might work better in terms of using the space inside the best. Just a skin of particle board and then thick foam rubber as the walls.
I know there are small, purpose-built single 12" speaker boxes for recording. But they are expensive and you are limited to one speaker in there. This way I could use my existing 4X12 and 2X12 cabs, as well as combos. And there might be enough space in the front half to not only record with the mic right on the speaker cone, but also move it a foot away and/or up in a corner or something. Maybe build in a gooseneck or two in there.
Am I all wet here? Will this provide acceptable results? Both in terms of cutting the outside volume down enough to be able to record (which is what I want) without disturbing my close-by neighbors. And in terms of the sound quality of the recorded output? Any issues with boominess and/or weird sound waves in there? My thought is that the eggshell, studio wall foam rubber would help with that... right? Whipped-up a pic in MS Paint to give a general idea of what I'm thinking here.
