Bingo, I was wondering when someone would mention Fast Eddie.
I much prefer the SUperD, but the X2N does sound really good through an older low gain amp. With amps with a ton of gain already they get uber-compressed, fizzy and then me no likey. I had the X2N briefly in Les Paul BITD and it sounded really good through my old JMP 50w MV combo, but I did not like it through my higher gain Marshall 4010 (combo version of a 2205), and Laney heads.

I thought I'd HATE the X2N until I bought a guitar on eBay that had one already installed.
It's around 1/4" gap between the pickup and the strings. I run that sucker on around "3" and it's fat city...and crunchy! Amazing pickup. I'm glad I finally checked one out.

Thx to post that.
This guy was the first famous rock guitarist that I saw on stage... I was 15. I remember that each riff was shaking my chest and that I was deaf at the end of the gig.
Regarding the X2N: it was my very first "aftermarket" pickup. IME/IMHO, it has "the flaws of its quality": rough and powerful but easily too raw and middy. I've always prefered Bill Lawrence (X)L500's to it.

X2N with a lower gain amp is GREAT. Not a lot of pre-amp noise or compression from the amp but gain from the pickup, which is more dynamic and more quiet.
Not what I'd call a modern sound, through an old low gain amp they come across like a big, huge, bad-assed PAF on steriods.

Sorry for necro bump, but there is little info on the X2N:
I just picked up a MIJ SoCal with one of these in the bridge. The pickup is a mile from the strings (1/2") and can't be adjusted closer because the the mounting screws strip/slip (need to tear it apart), but even still it sounds awesome. I'm really impressed. I've found it can be very flexible driving my DSL100's front end either red or green channel.
Because of the string distance, I can get hard rock tones with the green channel dimed, boost on. The red channel can get thrash metal tones that sound really good.
I never thought I'd like this pickup either. Interested to hear if anyone else has tried this lately.
