Both are true gems but here are your choices,
ANT= LIKE BUYING A 1957-1959 VINTAGE REAL DEAL P.A.F for a MERE $140 !
SETH= LIKE ACTUALLY GOING BACK TO 1957 AND TAKING IT OUT OF A GIBSON BRAND NEW!

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

These comments and posts have completely helped me clarify the BIGGEST dilemma of my life! lol..

I think I'm gonna grab a pair of Ant HB.. i've got some 500k pots laying around. I'll post some clips when I do get around to recording with the 335 in the near future!

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

BTW, what 'k' watt pots are recommended with the Ants.. 500k?

Thanks for all the opinions and stuff guys... really cleared up some questions of mine.

The Ants are about the pickups that are most sensitive to pot values that I have.

I'd say it is worth experimenting a little (crocodile clips will do).

I voted seth. I still think that on the duncan sound clips the seth bridge on the dirty setting sounds killer..! And i also appreciate the fact that out of the whole seym6ur line neal schon used the SH-55!

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

If you're looking for the ultimate p'up set, order a Seth set with an A5 magnet in the neck and with an A8 in the bridge and wound by Maricela.

You'll be thanking me afterwards.

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

I have both Antiquities and Seths in Les Pauls. Both are really good. The Antiquitys replaced Gibson 496R/500T Hot Ceramics in an LP Classic, and offer a little more mid-range complexity--like a good wine that reveals several flavors as it sits on your tongue. The Seths, which are in a semi-hollow LP Supreme are amazing, too. I play music from just about every popular genre on that guitar: jazz, rock, blues, country--it does it all so well. I think you'll definitely want 500K pots for both of them.

I love them both, and I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

Howdy,

I politely suggest '59s.
My 1980 ES-335 has '59s and I'm quite pleased. My tonal tastes are 50s & 60s Pop/Rock and Blues. Through my old Vibro Champ or Carmen Ghia this guitar will sing softly, wail, grunt, snort and even play smooth clean tones.
I've got good single note clarity, articulate chords, juicy tonal dynamics and all with SD's most affordable reincarnation of the legendary PAF.
I'm particularly pleased with the bridge P/U. My '59s are uncovered and sound great, but look rather odd without the Nickel covers! Good luck.

Hey there. I've got a mid 90's Gibson 335. The stock Gibson p/u's aren't cutting it. I've got Antiquities in my 'Am Tele' and love 'em. I was thinking 'bout placing humbucker Antiquities or Seth Lovers in my 335. I've heard Ant's in a Les Paul and loved the tone, but not sure how they would compare installed in a hollowbody.

What would you recommend?

Antiquities over Seth's, reason: Antiquities are exactly like the Seth's only difference being the Antiquities are like an aged 40+ year pair of Seth Lover HB pups. The Seth's sound more like a brand new HB pup set from a late 50's Les Paul right off the production line. If you really want to splurge, and to sound "classic" try a set of WCR Crossroads HB pups to get those Eric Clapton "Cream" and "Bluesbreaker" era tones.

Sorry, but the Seths and Ants are noticeably different, and it's not a weaker magnets.

I sold my Seths in a SG-acquire project before I could go on a crusade to exchange their magnets to find out more facts. But I can tell you that I have degaussed magnets and know how a simple degauss sounds like, and it's like the Seths to Ant difference.

Sure they are, and that is what is being stated by others here. Both pup sets DO utilize A2 magnets. The rest can be guestimated about the Antiquity construction from SD literature like f.e. many of hours of audio signal (from a signal generator) being sent through the coils, dirt/dust impregnation, slight magnet degaussing, and specific hand guided winding and or layering techniques, as well as several other factors. Seymour as always is the authority here, H--- the man wound pups for many English guitar hero greats on Tottenham Court Road at Fender's London location many moons ago when most of us were kids or just a gleam in our father's eyes.

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

ANother really good pickup for a 335 is the AII pro set. These pickups are a great soundinf PAF type of pickup and in a 335 would be great. I have a '85RI and it has the stock PAF RI in the guitar. I would never really consider changing them as this is one of my favorite HB guitars, but the AII's are very close to this. I imagine it would also depend on what you are trying to do with it.

Potting the Pickups will help the feedback issue with semi hollows. I did not need to pot mine, but it can be a an issue if you are playing fairly loud and right on top of the amp. I find I need to stand where the guitar is to either side of the amp and as far away as I can get, then I never have any feedback. On small stages I prefer a solid body. Its easier to control.

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

Nobody going to take this down the P-90 road?

+1

There's been tons of great opinions regarding full HB's. I met a guy about 3 years ago in London, when I toured through England, who had a P-90 set in his semi-hollowbody, and he swore by them. I didn't ever get a chance to take a listen to his setup... but I'd imagine they sound real gritty.

I think Troy VanLeeuwen (APC and QOTSA) uses SD's 'Vintage SP90-1.'

Re: Opinions on replacement P/U's for my 335: Antiquities or Seths?

am watching this thread, as I'm not enjoying my semi-hollow with Seths as much as I like my LP with Ants... but I can't put a finger on why.

Also used to have a semi-hollow with P-94's which sounded great and was characterized by my friends as sounding very versatile. Even the OOP setting was useful. But I couldn't stand the hum when the pups were goosed by gain pedals.

Seths in my ES www.youtube.com/watch?v=msY0KDWbNSk

A quick noodle on a Gibson ES-333 with Duncan Seth Lovers. As if the playing isn't corny enough, the recording is about as basic as it gets. I used an old Johnson J-Station (Fender Blackface clean and Mesa Recto dirty)directly into the cheezy mic input on my computer and recorded with the generic Windows wav recorder. Then I lumped it with a picture of the guitar into this video. These 333 guitars are very cool and a nice alternative to the more expensive 335.
