opinions on STK-S1 Classic Stack?

Re: opinions on STK-S1 Classic Stack?

I think the best idea for a noiseless/humbucking Strat-sized pickup is one that has one coil for the first three strings, and another coil for the bottom three strings (similar to the old double-coil P-bass pickups, or the ones on the Fender Electric XII, but those aren't Strat-sized). I just the other day happened on a new Fender noiseless pickup that has the two coils side-by side (or "end-to-end") that fits in a Strat cutout, but I lost the link. They were selling them at one of the big online sellers. I think this has the most potential for sounding like a real Strat single coil, only noiseless. I'll try to find the link again, my computer crashed and I lost the tab that had those new pickups on it. Fralin makes a pickup that uses the same idea, but again it isn't Strat-sized. I've always wanted to try putting those pickups that came in the Electric XII in a Strat, and see how they sound in a six-string guitar, but one that fits a Strat pickup cutout would even be better.

What you're referring to is a set named "Super 55 Split Coil" and here is the experience of a user (posts 43 & 45):

Yeah, those are the ones, seems they aren't very good from the experience of that one guy. That's too bad, because I think the idea has merit, but it looks like Fender didn't really get it right. That's probably why I haven't heard too much about these pickups, do they put them in any production guitars?. I had never heard of them before I saw a listing on Ebay for them.

Re: opinions on STK-S1 Classic Stack?

I loved my classic stack in the middle position so much, that I started playing the middle position alone for a lot of songs.
I found it had a huge flompy low end in the neck position, which is ironic because someone else said the low end was lacking.

See also: Duckbuckers.

There's not a lot of info out there about Duckbuckers even though they've been around for so long. They're almost always put in the middle position between little humbuckers, and position 3 is probably the least often used position on Strats. I wonder how a set up Duckbuckers would sound compared to vintage voiced stacked humbuckers.

. . . and position 3 is probably the least often used position on Strats.

Funny you should mention that. The STK-S4m is one of the first pups I've ever done in a Strat, that makes the middle position sound good when used by itself. (IIRC, the Cool Rails also accomplished the same thing.)

Funnier still, is that those were the exact pick-ups that made me aware that the middle position could be a viable position on it's own.
First I had the Classic Stack there. Then I tried the Cool Rail and freaked. It (Cool Rail) is an amazing middle position pick-up- I think the only reason this isn't talked about is because very few people use the middle by itself- except for the obligatory boring SRV riff or two :)

^ +1

I really need to revert one of my Strats back to its Cool Rails x 3 configuration. The only reason I changed it was because it was back in the day when I was trying new pups like I try new beer. I'm a little more settled in now. I need to go back to my own foundations.
