Opinions on the DSL 50?

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

Marshalls typically like 16 ohm loads.

Wish you could plug into my 1998 DSL. It's FUN!
Don't get me wrong.....I loved the tone and versatility of the DSL 50. I just had to move on after the third one crapped out on me. I forgot I moved on to a Soldano Hot Rod 50 Plus for a year and a half before staying on the Knucklehead....both of which are great amps and built like tanks.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

TSL 60 all the way! 3 Channels and power. DSL are great amps too, but to fizzy, grainy and trebly for me. I can get a close to JCM 800 hot rod tone with my TSL crunch channel gain 6-7 and turn down the lead channel's gain to 4 and get a great lead tone and boost with channel volume. Also TSL 60 has a Master Volume!

Rather have 3 channels Clean, Dirty and Lead than 2 with ( Which one's do I use cause I only have 2 )

I use marshall cab with Vintage 30's

DSL are way over rated and TSL is very under rated due world wide web.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

I know there was a huge orgy about them here a year or so ago. You guys all feel the same way?

I'm just wondering if I would like the DSL better than the crunchbox/Bassman right now. I am keeping the Bassman, I love it for blues and with the crunchbox, it sounds great for my stuff I write... but I just wonder if the DSL would be better for my modern rock affairs.

DSL will slay Modern rock. Even though the clean is somewhat sterile but useable, it's no bassman. The crunch on the other hand, is awesome. Green channel with boost engaged (orange) with your crunchbox slammed on the front end would be tonal bliss. trust me.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

KEEP THE BASSMAN!!!

But, get also that DSL!.

To get the best of the DSL you have to really crank the amp. When the EL34 start to sing is where the magic appear but, this can happens around 7/8 on your volume dial. Painful level.
And for sure, paired with a 4x12" cab with two V30 and two Heritage is pure rock and roll.

If you plan to play it at lower levels, you need the help of some pedals to do the trick. I don't agree with the people that says that there is no way to get good tones with a Strato. Even that I recognize that a LP suits in its natural home, an strato with some trick can be as tastefull as an LP in those.

Some variated tones using just the Classic/Clean channel (because I CANNOT crank the power amp as I want), an strato (with SD Antiquity II Surf, BTW!) and some pedals.

Well, its the 85th anniversary combo that everyone says is just a DSL50 with a lifting.

I'm a big fan of my TSL 60 as well, never compared it to a DSL 50 directly though.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

I Like both the DSL 50 and TSL 60. Dual vs Triple channel. Both sound great, just felt the DSL was trebly although the overdrive 1 channel ROCKS. I compared TSL 60 to the DSL and liked the TSL.

I would use both live, just like the TSL 3rd channel option and 3 way footswitch. MARSHALLS ROCK! Like to try a JVM205H but can't find one to play live. All that is around here are the JVM410's. Not into the 100 watt thing.

Has anyone played the 205H JVM and how was the overdrive tones?

Also JB-4's RULE! Forgot I was in the Duncan Forum. LOL

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

I remember when I had DSL, then I switched to high speed.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

I had three DSL 50's and all had to be returned to Guitar Center within a month.....I loved the amp right up to the point where after playing it for 30 minutes the sound would drop out..

The common denominator here is pre-amp tubes, probably from the same batch. Many current production pre-amp tubes last about 30 minutes in a high gain Marshall. I have this problem with my Jubilee. It will eat the V1 12AX7 in 30 minutes if its not NOS.

No way dude something is seriously wonky here. Amp manufacturers arent stupid you dont hear of Diezel herberts or 5150's frying tubes in 30 minutes. Just cause an amp is high gain doesnt mean it will go through tubes faster. The jubilee was built LOOOONG after the golden age of tubes. Tube quality sucked in the 80's and I guarantee you that Marshall wasnt sourcing "NOS" tubes for their new amps. Not to mention that most of the extra gain in a jubilee comes from clipping diodes not tubes.

I own 5 different Marshalls right now none kill new tubes like that. A good friend of my has a jubilee that I retube and rebias for him every couple of years. This amp sees probably 40-60 shows a year and band practice for 3 hours a night 3 times a week and its never been back to me cause a tube quit on him.

If I was you I would be taking my amp to a tech and asking him "Why is my amp eating tubes"

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

It doesn't eat all tubes just certain batches of certain current production tubes like current Tung Sol and Mullard. You can't use some of these in V2 of plexis without problems either. Jubilees came with German RFT/Siemens tubes. It doesn't eat those. I know Jubilees.

Re: Opinions on the DSL 50?

The issue with some new sensor designs is in the pi slot and has nothing to do with your amp being a Marshall it's an issue using those tubes in that slot on any amp even then that has nothing to do with why your amp nukes V1.
