It's great, imo.

Compared to an SG Standard? I also don't really know what to expect from the EMG 81s. I'd probably put in passives.

The EMGs would have to go. I'm not a Gibbo fan, and am a big ESP fan, which is a suprise to no one, LOL. So, I tip towards the ESP. :)

Re: Opinions on the ESP Viper Standard (not LTD)

I figured as much...just wanted some reasons, pros/cons, likes/dislikes of the two.

Re: Opinions on the ESP Viper Standard (not LTD)

The Viper is balanced better. I also think SGs feel kind of fragile... the Viper most definitely does NOT.

Re: Opinions on the ESP Viper Standard (not LTD)

The viper tends to be better balanced...

Also, you'll find out that the ESP has more wood, is heavier and might have a deeper tone....

Great guitar IMO...

So it is thicker? I can't find any info on nut width...is it 1 11/16?

Owned both, no comparison. They have a similar shape and that';s where it ends. The Viper does not feel or sound anything like an SG. The Viper has a thicker body, and thinner neck for starters. The Viper tone has a lot more bass to it and is thicker physically and sounding than the thinner, brighter SG. If you're looking for a cool modern sounding, fast playing, guitar the Viper is cool. If you're looking for an SG, get an SG.

I don't know the nut width, but the body is substantially more beefy. I've always thought SGs sit kind of awkwardly (like most BC Rich guitars) but the Viper sits in the "normal" position.

Re: Opinions on the ESP Viper Standard (not LTD)

I tried both and went for the Gibson. I thought that the Viper didn't feel special at all, I tested it at a store with a good amp for quite a long time. It simply didn't do a thing for me.

When I went for the Gibson I liked the idea of passives and no battery box (a small thing, yes), and 2 vol 2 tone config. I haven't had any regrets so far.

Btw, compared to some earlier posts, I find my SG more comfortable to play, sitting and standing, than any other guitar I've tried. So I wouldn't worry about such comments without trying the shape for yourself.

ESP vipers are great guitars, quality and workmanship are among the best out there, But the EMGs gotta go ;)

Personally I can´t really connect with any SG style guitars... I prefer the Gibson, I just like the feel of the neck more and the Viper seems to be more "modern" all around to me with the bigger body as well, although acoustically I have to admit I tend more towards the Viper...... But if I had to have an SG I´d probably still take the Gibson ;)

Mmmmmmm.... ESP... :32:

I really don't like SG style guitars but out of the two, I would definately get the Viper. The SG doesn't do anything for me at all, I just hate the feel of it.

I love the feel of ESP's and the quality of it is probably higher than that of the Gibson.

IMHO, you should look into the Horizon too

I dunno if you can go wrong with an actual ESP as opposed to an LTD. I've had two ESP and the one was a custom made and played like a dream the other was a KH2 it was nice but not my cup of tea. It was nothing like the custom that I had. In general any ESP I've played has been outstanding as far as feel and comfort.
