Listen up and take notes!

The MG series sounds okay at low volumes, but once you crank it up, it's just aweful. Stay away from them.

Recommendations: Roland Cube 60 or a Vox AD50VT. I actually had to pick between a cube and a AD and I took the AD. Much better tone, and they can get any tone you're looking for.

Out all the amps that have been talked about:

MGs
AVTs
Cubes
Vox ADs

Its really hard to beat the hybrid amps when you compare them to solidstate stuff. The MGs aren't terrible, it just has limitations. If you want an afforatable Marshall tone go for the AVT series. If you want the modeling and extra features and flexability, the Vox ADs Valvetronics are hard to beat. I am though very impressed with the Cubes 30, 60, and the micro, which is probably the best sounding battery powered amp in the world. I hope that helps.

Does anyone else find it wierd that the better tones come from amps with valve-driven preamps... yet the really juicy sound of cranked up amps comes from both pre-and power-amp valves together? Has anyone made an amp with solid state preamp but valve-driven poweramp? And how would this sound?

Oh, btw, on that cube 60 im selling ya, for $50 extra i'll include my marshall JH-1 pedal, you'll be able to get tons of iron maiden tones and what not then.

My vox is built like that, I honestly am hard pressed to hear the difference between a tube amp and it.

Its got an amazing tone, the difference between even the best solid state is night and day.

Peavey built an amp like that once. I'm told it sound alright but not great. Then again, it was Peavey in the 80's, so you wouldn't really expect it to sound great would you.

The Vox Valvetronix aren't actually as simple as a tube pre and solid state poweramp. Both of those are actually solid state, with a miniature tube poweramp in between that supposedly colors the tone like a tube poweramp would without boosting the signal too much.
