Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

HI Guys.. Gibson did make a bridge like this one.. What bothers me is the flat front.. I am not a gibson expert but i would get the serial number and call Gibson, to verify.

There are so many clones out there now.. did u guys ever see this sight.

Notice in the ebay ad the seller doesn't say its a Gibson, trying to decieve.

Just be careful what you buy and have the guitar check out completely..the scammers are getting to good.

NIce Guitar, I like the top on it.

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

It looks real to me. I could be ****ed wrong, as well. The serial number is the real proof.

I looks a lot like my 1981 Gibson 335-S on the rear. The tuning keys, volute, belly cut...the TP-6 tailpiece. One clue that I see that makes me believe it is from 1980, is what appears to be a brass replacement nut in the first pic (a short lived mod popular in the early '80's). This would be rather rare for anyone in their right mind, to fake it that far.

Anyhow...a couple quick and dirty pics of the rear of my Gibson. It has a particularly thin/fast neck. I tend to like a little mure chunk in the neck.

An update! Ok, a lot of questions were directed to the owner and Gibson was contacted regarding this guitar..I'm happy to report she is totally for real. She was one of 50 copies custom made for a Montreal store called "La Tosca" in 1980. Some even have the name "La Tosca" engraved on the truss rod cover, but not all (this guitar doesn't have it). Serial# 826900XXX. Stamped made in USA and 036 below, tuners are stamped gibson and are original to the guitar, just like everything else with perhaps the exception of the brass nut, but i'm not sure if it's an aftermarket mod like the previous poster mentioned or original. Everything else: creme P90's, fine tuning tail piece, slim taper neck etc.. all original. No dead spots on neck, very fast neck and lots of output from the pickups. As for the price the owner is asking..I won't divulge, but it's between $1000 and $1500...A fair price for this example IMO.

How does that one company, payless, get by with doing those copies? They look like good fakes, the 3 hole tr cover being one of the first givaways. For $350 with shipping, I may try one. Hey if it's as good as Epiphone or better, it's a cheap alternative!

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

I like it. I also like that it has a taste of maple rather than a full carved top. Should give a touch of bite but still stay in special-land.

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

AS far as Payless goes... Gibson and other makers as far as i understand are in the process of trying to shut them down.. Nothing wrong with making a copy, but when you put somebody else name on your product to sell.

I would be careful buying a guitar from them. First there is no contact numbers and no returns,. second.. >>> are you really going to be sent a guitar.. also what is the guitar made out of... could be PLY- Wood...

Do they really have Mother-of pearl or is it plastic..

I would be interested in finding a person that bought one., and find out what these are all about..

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

Pretty cool guitar krall. I'm glad everything seems to check out on it.

I hope they are able to shut that Payless down.

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

Its a nice guitar. The thing you have to be careful of with these is the necks crack at the body joint. The front pivkup is routed through the neck tenon, so the neck joint is pretty weak. Be absolutely certain that there are no neck issues before you buy!

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

those payless copies are unbelievable. i cannot believe they blatantly get away with that, lol.

Me personally, I would jump on it for that price. I really like the hell out of that guitar though!

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

The payless site has an ebay store and it says items usually take around 5 days to ship to the U.S. They also take pay-pal, so if you didn't get the guitar, you could get your funds back from paypal. For $300 bucks, I would try one.

Re: Opinions on this Rare Gibson?

Good luck on the guitar, if everything checks out looks like u got a good buy.. The price only go up from there.. I haven't see a gibson yet in good shape that went down in Value over many years.

Geeess The made in Japan guitar's are taking off and selling at high prices..

I like it. I wouldn't pay more than $1200 for it though.
