Opinions wanted on Dimebucker

I'm starting to plan another Warmoth guitar build. This one will be a single bridge humbucker Strat or Soloist - probably alder with a rosewood on maple neck. I'm wondering what pickup to use. I have a Screamin' Demon in the bridge of one of my guitars and like that a lot. It has an edge or "attitude" to it that's cool but at times it can get a little trebly. That same guitar has a Full Shred neck pickup, and that smooths out the treble in the middle position nicely. I don't necessarily want another guitar with the SD in the bridge, so I've considered a bridge Full Shred. I thought I was decided on that but as I listened to sound clips of different pups on the Seymour Duncan website, the Dimebucker caught my attention. In the clean sample it sounds even more trebly than my SD, but the dirty clip sounds surprisingly full bodied - with more punch than either the SD or FS while still sounding articulate.

The kinds of sounds I like are 90's and modern rock, like the Foo Fighters and Ben Harper's band gets. I like distortion, but want something that will still clean up halfway decently. Opinions on these pickups as an only pup? Is the Dimebucker a one trick pony? I'm liking the sound of it on the Seymour site.

Foo Fighter tone is largerly a PAF-style pickup in a Gibson-style guitar through a medium-crunchy amp. The Dimebucker is a super-dooper high-output pickup...

The reason I'm not going with a LP type guitar is that I want to do another Warmoth build, and I have this opinion that bolt on necks should be on guitars that look more like Fenders. What do you think about the FS bridge?

I thought the Dime was too mid scooped. Had a hollow sound with my rig. I've never tried the FS.

I've got a dime in 1 of my guitars that i threw in at a pinch when my C5 died

I dont think its as bad as many say . It has some redeming qualities . I'm not that into ceramic mags in general . I've never used a screming demon but the dime has a ceramic treble egde to it as well for sure .The mids arnt super present but its no where near as scooped as a C5 to my ear . Its got a sound but it does always sound like the dime . but I think ceramic mags in general are like that .

The clean is decent enough for a high ouput bridge . But My Alt8 in another guitar clean is way better and its high outpuit as well

funny thing about the dime is I think it sounds better through my messing around at home set up which is a few pedals into a crappy behringer DI into a soundcard and studio monitors than it sounds through my dual rectifier running hot . Has kinda a congested sound through my amp if that makes sense . Its usuable and I'd even say sounds good but not kick ass great like we all want to .

I have a BKP nailbomb set in the mail to replace it so its not a keeper for me

Very harsh. Really tight lows and borderline icepick highs. Scooped mids. Undesirable cleans. Surprisingly cool split. Doesn't clean up too well.

Sounds best in mahogany.

Got a dime here for years in my SG. Bassy, trebbly, some scoop to it. A very rought and somewhat "non-organic" sound. Love (but on the market, check the trading section....wink wink)

I had one. I thought it was broken. Sounded like a single coil with an EMG afterburner jacked up to 10. Sold it to a friend of mine cheap, informing him I thought it was broken. He installed it and said "No, it's fine, that's just how it sounds."

I had a single-pickup Strat-type once with a Classic Stack in the bridge.

Had a surprising amount of drive.

Sound like a full bodied humb to me (funny thing that I have a EMG AB too with it). Maybe the pup wasn't meant for that guitar :dot:

The Dime is actually a really cool pup. The low end is tight yet squishy enough with a bit of give and does thrash and metal great. Lead tones are pretty cool, if a bit trebely. Someone called it kind of like a Tele on steriods and withou the noise and that may not be far off. It does have a distinctive tone though. So if you want to ratchet the aggression down and play some Zep or blues or whatever, you can, but you will still sound like your playing that stuff through a Dimebucker, if that makes any sense. I think thats what turns some people off to it.

Mahogany?
