Options regarding my Traynor.

A Skater

Hiya guys, I've been playing a pretty amazing Traynor YCV40 and I'm feeling like doing something to it. The amp is really good for classic rock (think AC/DC, Zepplin, and some rockabilly) as well as some medium gain rock. However, it doesn't have that darkish twang I like from guitar amps (the YCV50 does have it as a result of EL34 tubes, I have 6L6). So, in an attempt to get that twang, I'm considering doing the following things:

1) Install a Celestion Vintage 30.
2) Buying a tubescreamer.
3) Using an EQ pedal.
4) Buying an attenuator to crank it well.

Suggestions? Comments?

I'm into indie rock/alternative. This amp does it pretty well, but it sounds too bright/UKish.

Re: Options regarding my Traynor.

it's not impossible to put EL34's in your amp, may consider that

what's throwing me off is you're wanting some ycv50 tones, which has the brit tubes, a more brit speaker, and if i recall more of a brit voicing, but you're saying you don't want brit tones

you also seem to enjoy the zep tones you get, which are... brit tones

It's a bit weird, but the ycv50 sounds a bit darker (more like a Wizard amp) than a ycv40. However, I had no idea I could put EL34's in my amp.

Care to elaborate?

Re: Options regarding my Traynor.

just need to mod the sockets & possibly the bias section

any decent tech can do it for you fairly easily

Re: Options regarding my Traynor.

Get an attenuator! I just got one for my crate v3112T and it sounds so much more thick cranked.

Re: Options regarding my Traynor.

Or get yellow jackets and stick in my fave tubes EL84's but any el's and celestions would make it more british so i dont get the whole its too British because like said your suggestions are making it more british.

OK, don't rebias, retube, or get a new amp. Speaker upgrades are always nice, but I'd get a dirtbox ( petal ) which could be more versitile and cost effective than tweaking the poop out of a decent amp. No need to drop big cash on a pedal either, as there are plenty of decent ones to choose from. Play more and pay less. You're doing fine. Hang in there.
