Orange Amps

Re: Orange Amps

it sounds like you want a thunderverb 50

AMAZINGLY versatile; pretty much every kind of sound you'd want is in there

Re: Orange Amps

Got a chance to hear the Tiny Terror, Thunderverb 50, and AD50 (custom shop), each played through the Orange 4x12 cab. They all sounded cool, but I did not experience any jaw dropping moments or anything (not like I did with Hiwatt, for example). Given that listening conditions were not optimal and I was not actually playing them (the player was using a les paul junior with a P90), don't take these too seriously--here are my impressions of the sounds:

AD50 was probably my favorite, but it needed to be pretty loud to get going. Sounded like I imagine older Orange amps might sound (note: this is an uneducated assessment), a marshally vibe, but somehow different? This was probably the kind of sound I was thinking Orange amps sounded like.

Thunderverb was cool, and the built in attenuator was a real bonus to bring in some power tube saturation at lower volumes, but it did not knock my socks off (at least, under these playing conditions). Lots of preamp gain on tap, too. The second channel does not have a full EQ; rather, it has a mid shaping function, which was good at getting scooped sounds, which I'm sure some would really like (the scooped sound is not my thing--at all--so this channel was lost on me).

Tiny Terror was pretty cool, too. Could have been the guitar, but it seemed a bit "buzzy" to me, but did have a nice rawk vibe to it. I was disappointed by the slight buzzy nature...if others have not experienced this, let me know. I suspect better tubes would help here. I noticed that the gain really jumped at about 1 o'clock on the dial...does a second gain stage kick in here or something?? The other two amps were EL34 based, whereas the TT is EL84-based. This demo made me realize that perhaps I like EL34 amps better than El84 amps, despite the fact that lots of my favorite players use EL84-based amps and I adore the vox sound when other people play it...

Unfortunately, I did not hear the Rocker 30 or Rockerverb 50.

I'm not writing them off yet, but my GAS is subsiding.

Was the sound of the TT at all similar to what you hear in this demo?

Re: Orange Amps

If the TT buzziness was with humbuckers with the volume over 2pm then yeah, thats the character of the EL84s showing through.

the shape control is a lot more versatile in my experience than you're making it out to be, it can do a lot more than scoop the mids. I always kind of considered it a "lead" channel where you used that control to cut a little bass & add a little compression/gain for solos, the only way i could consider it sounding scooped is if you turned it all the way down.

What didn't you like about it? The only way i could see someone not digging it is if they didn't like orange, I mean EVERY sound is in that amp but they all sound distinctly Orange

I think the gist of his post is that he's finding Orange isn't for him.

And what does 'distinctly Orange' mean, anyway? -I've yet to play a modern Orange that sounds like a genuine vintage Orange. I'm afraid the true essence of Orange was lost whenever the marketing dept realised that there were bunches of players out there ready to buy on looks provided they heard something reassuringly familiar (read: more like a Marshall) when they plugged in. Sad really, as the old Oranges really did have their own thing, especially when cranked to the point of fuzziness.

Re: Orange Amps

Folks,

Can someone explain to me why I find myself searching the internet for info on Orange Amps?

I think I am looking for something "dirty" to pair with my Reeves Custom 50 (Hiwatt-style amp...been using it clean with pedals for dirt). I trend towards classic rock tones, which could be interpreted as "Marshall", but I think I am looking for something different. If anyone has experience with the Tiny Terror, Rocker 30, Rockerverb 50, or Thunderverb 50, OR50, etc., feel free to chime in/talk me down.

Thanks!

"Dirty""classic"and"Marshall": Marshall
"different": the way you play

other guitarist in my band has an OR80 clone and it doesn't sound THAT far off from the thunderverb equivalent kinda sound

the rockers I'll say are pretty far from the old ones but to me the orange tone is sort of in the overall softness of the tone, it's something in the low mids and the way the highs are EQ'd...

Hmmm...it's not that I didn't like it, I did like it...but did I like it enough to put down nearly $3K (amp and cabinet)? Not based on this particular demo....recall the caveats on my impressions...I was not the one playing and the listening conditions were not optimal, and as such, I will return again and try it out myself...the attenuator was a neat addition, and I am still intrigued that one can potentially use the Thunderverbs as bass amps. With respect to the shape control, I did not really get to play with it to see what it was capable of, and the player there was focusing on scooped sounds (not my thing, as I said). I could see that it would be useful in the right situation and is a neat way to approach a tone control (more like a parametric than bass-mid-treble).

Could be...and after reading loads of reviews, posts, and listening to clips, perhaps I had built them up too much in my mind? I suspect this happens a lot with gear...

This demo is one of the reasons I was looking into the TT...no, it did not sound like that in person (see previous post with respect to caveats on the listening conditions). I really want to demo the TT one on one and see if I can make it sound like that...

Re: Orange Amps

well, i will get to hear my rhythm guitarists new Orange Rockerverb 50 this week. he bought it today along with an Orange 4 X 12 cab for.................$1800 (used). I think he got an incredible deal.
He did have a question though - he said the guy had taken off the tube heat guards (?) as they were rattling. Should he put them back on?

That's a great deal. Let us know what you think!

You're talking on the preamp tubes? They're not really necessary.

Re: Orange Amps

Well ,ot's true that orange amps have their own sound ,and their meaty crunch isn't pleasing every ear.

So maybe another amp company would suit you better?

There are things to make an orange amp better tho!
you can get a 2 x 12" cabinet with Eminence delta pro 12A s in it. It will make the sound clearer ,punchier ,tighter and louder. They must be front loaded...
If you are after poweramp distortion ,forget about my suggestion tho LOL. The deltas are 400 w each ,so no distortion or whatsoever LOL.
