ORANGE VT1000 Portable Valve Tester. Pretty Cool.

Just an FYI -Orange's handy travel size Valve tester . -It's about 1/10th of the size of my old school one and really simple to use.

About 500.00 bucks -so probably not worth it to some unless you have a large collection of amps and mildly worn, old, NOS, and ones you just can't remember where you got from.

This product probably best serves shops, tours, and people who are generally paranoid about ever hour of work they've put on their precious NOS American tubes they got for Xmas from Mom and Dad back a decade ago (Sound familiar?)

The VT1000 incorporates patent-pending technology and currently tests the following valves: EL34/6CA7; EL34L; 6L6; 6V6/6v6GTA; KT66; KT77; KT88; 6550; 5881; EL84/6BQ5; ECC81/12AT7; ECC82/12AU7; ECC83/12AX7; ECC99; 12BH7

In approximately two minutes, the VT1000 performs an extensive series of tests including:

  • Heater filament test: Short circuit
  • Heater filament test: Open circuit
  • Heater filament test: Tolerance check
  • Heater cathode insulation: Leakage
  • Heater cathode insulation: Short Circuit
  • Tests for heater current abnormalities
  • Amplification factor
  • Voltage gain
  • Power gain
  • Screen grid test
  • Mutual conductance test
  • Dual test for double triodes
  • Emission
  • Inter electrode leakage
  • Inter electrode short circuit
  • Flash-over (arc detection, high voltage breakdown)
  • Gas ionisation test
  • The VT1000 really opens the door to everyone to have an extremely simple, portable, reliable, inexpensive and safe way to test valves.

Do you actually have one, or have you just heard about it? I have four tube amps including longcat's SVT hybrid along with a couple dozen preamp tubes that I need to test and sort. I know a guy that would probably let me borrow his, but I'm torn as to whether I should get one of my own. If I'd had one two years ago I could've saved ~$350 at Savage Audio when my 2555 crapped out. OTOH I learned a ton from the shop owner when I went to pick it up including being turned onto a few different tubes that I'd never tried before.

Haven't purchased, I have only borrowed one -it's way more convenient than my old school dime store one or pulling out an Oscope.

I want one of these, but the price is sort of high.

I have an old Heathkit tester I haven't used. It might need a refurb and work. I have a lot of amps and a lot of tubes I'd love to test. It would be great to borrow one because after I tested and labeled everything, I doubt I would need it again.

cool to have a new device like this, $500 is a little steep but not unreasonable for what it is. if i come across a used one for $300 i might do it
