Hey All, I have this guitar below (Gretsch TK-300) and EMGs in the pic died in it years ago... And since this guitar just hangs in the studio and Dimarzio Super Distortions were on sale -I grabbed a set this week.

So solid maple guitar -reasonably bright guitar -any thoughts on the pots and caps -should I consider anything other than a 500k and Orange Drop?

Thanks

No help on the pickups since I've never tried DiMarzio stuff really.

That said I wanted to compliment you on one hell of a moustache.

I've used a Strat sized SD in a reasonably bright Bullet Strat with just a 250k volume pot with great results, so I'd say two 500k would be fine. Can't say anything about a Super 2 neck, if that's what you're using

I used for a couple of years a SD on a alder body, maple neck strat with 250k Vole and Tone and it was surprisingly balanced, very fat but not dull, nor brittle, I'd say usable for a myriad of genres, for clean, yes, a bit too much but from crunch and up, a great companion

Not sure your tastes, but typically I tend to use the brightest pots I can find (at the high end of tolerance) and use whatever cap is standard for the model, and just roll the tone off if it's too bright, or adjust the amp, or use a pedal EQ or other pedal that can control the tone with that guitar if I don't want to change the amp. If the guitar is already bright, then I might use pots that are on spec or below. For Super Distortion in solid maple, if it were me, I might buy a handful of 500k linear for volume and pick the one that is between 485k-500k. For the tone, I'd get 500k audio taper but find one on the high end of tolerance, like 510k-520k, or get a no-load so I could take it out of circuit on the fly. For cap, standard 0.022uF Orange Drop would be my go-to. 0.047uF or 0.1uF if I wanted to really roll it off like having a wah pedal on the tone knob. If it's way too bright, you might have to drop to 250k.

I say give it a try first. SD is not as shrieks or dark as people say, IMO.

And I like BB's 500k linear suggestion.

If not, try a Gibson 300k on the higher end.

Haha, thats my buddy Juan Montoya, I bought the guitar from him because he used it on one of my favorite albums of all time.

I have a nice collection of guitars that were used on significant records.

set? as in neck and bridge? for the bridge 500k and .022 drop is where id start. sd in the neck isnt my favorite

I know from experience that maple guitars can be super bright but... For the record, I've a Superstrat with a DiMarzio Super Distortion paired to a 500k volume + a no load tone control (which is the same than no tone control when the pot is full up) and I find the pickup a bit dark / dull even with this setup. So I'd really be open to the widest possible array of resistive loads in such a case (I'd even try a 1M volume if needed). YMMV.
