Has anyone had experience with it? is this one of Ibanez's better versions of the floyd rose?

Re: Original Edge tremolo

Erm, if it were all that wonderful, they would not have brought out the Edge II and Lo-Pro.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

.....It is a Japanese thing....or perhaps just the urge to redo stuff....no nothing of the new actually reaches the Edge...
They still make spareparts for it...I still have one that is about some 20 years+ old.
II Lo Pro and III sucks to put it mildly!!
The Z one is cool....forget the rest!

Re: Original Edge tremolo

The Edge is an amazing trem. It stays in tune better than pretty much anything else out there. The Edge Lo-Pro is the same thing, just shaped differently so that the fine tuners are all the way at the back and out of the way of the string locks, giving you a nice place to rest your pick hand. I've owned three guitars with these bridges, and they're the only fulcrum-style locking trems that give a real Floyd a run for its money.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

Vai and Satriani still use the original Edge. That's gotta count for something!

Re: Original Edge tremolo

i have an old Edge... mine has to be from one of the early Jem series... It's a nice design in many ways... i love the way there is a metal plate under the trem base that the saddles screw into... that way if you tighten a saddle screw down too hard you just have to replace that plate and not replace the whole trem...

the Edge is a monster size trem... it is much larger in size then a FRO.... there is a theory out there that the bigger the bridge and the more metal parked in the center of the guitars body floating on 2 knife edges the worst the tone... but hey it works for a lot of people...

Re: Original Edge tremolo

I have one on a 90's Ibanez. IMO it's the best Floyd out there, it has the smootest response of any Floyd (and I currently have original Floyds, Scaller and Gotoh's). It has a huge footprint though, unfortunately an Edge won't fit in an OFR route. IMO The Edge was the perfection of Floyd for those looking for something that could smoothly do whammy abuse and come back in tune.\

I still have one around somewhere that I took off an Ibanez- since the trem was great but the wood on the guitar sucked.

Mr Floyd actually praised the Japanese effort on this baby!
And it is Gotoh who made it.
Along with their High Stability Floyd, which I like just as much.
The OFR and those two are my fave Floyds, and the only ones I use.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

Cool. I was considering picking one of these up:

I'm also considering this one, since there is indeed a 7 in the name of my band.

the PGM 100 is a great guitar and the original edge trem is great. I've had mine for about a couple years now and it's a great guitar. Although something to keep in mind is that they have a wizard I neck which is the thinnest neck ibanez makes.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

The original Edge is considered by many to be the best tremolo ever offered. I personally like the Lo Pro version, but you can't go wrong with the Edge.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

yes it is a fixed bridge. Which is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Mick Thompson: Boy I really love the annoyance of tuning up a floyd rose, but hate the tremolo, which is the entire point of the added tuning stabilizers. I got it! Let's keep the annoying string locks and the fact that you have to clip the balls off of strings in order to use it, but get rid of the cool tremolo!

Re: Original Edge tremolo

Isn't the idea of that thing to have the stability of a fixed bridge and string locks with the fine-tuning ability of a Floyd? It's a lot like blocking a trem but continuing to used the pressure pads, fine tuners, etc.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

Yeah, but there's a fine-tuning stopbar/tom setup you can get. Or a Kahler 3310 (ick).

Oh, yeah. I don't know; maybe he likes the tone of the thing? I've often wondered how much of the bell-like quality of an OFR you could get if it were just mounted directly to the face of the guitar instead of balanced on posts between string and spring tension. I mean, I hardly ever use the trem anymore myself, but I love the way the Floyd bridge sounds on my guitars.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

I think the edge series rock pretty well, I had an edge pro on my Ibanez JS1000 and on my current RG1570... I cant complain at all, then again I don't do serious whammy bar tricks.

Re: Original Edge tremolo

on paper and for looks i really enjoy Ibanez designs but when i play their guitars for some reason they do little for me... i tried out some nicer ones, the more expensive range, and they did nothing for me tone wise... most of the necks feel too square in my hands but i do like the Wizard profiles none-the-less...

being a Vai and Satch fan i'd love to be able to find an Ibanez oneday that i love...

i really liked the idea behind that "0" trem they started to offer a few years ago... the way that thing pivots on the barings is neat... but again the sound is not there for me to buy one... i'd prefer an EDGE in the end if i do buy an Ibanez oneday

Re: Original Edge tremolo

I don't use trems, but from what I've tried out, I actually prefer the original Edges to Floyds. They feel smoother and not quite as stiff to me.

I'd gladly put my Edge Pro 7 trem with the locking stud mod up against any real Floyd Rose or original Edge any day of the week.
