Re: Original Little 59s?
OK, I have custom-made hard-tail mahogany Strat body (routed S-S-S) with a Fender rosewood on maple neck. When I built it, 10+ years ago, I put a Little '59 in the neck position, a Duckbuster in the middle and a Hotrail in the bridge. The Neck and Middle pups are wired to a 3-way Tele switch, then share a Volume pot. The Hotrail has it's own Vol pot, then everything runs through a TBX control. That way I can add in as much or as little of the Hotrail as I want.
I was originally going to use a black pearl pick guard and bought black pups. But I found it to be too dark, so I ended up with a white PG and black pups. The ducky and the 59 work well, but I would like to be able to “bridge” the coils to get some Strat 2 and 4 position sounds. And I have an original Cool Rail I would like to try in the bridge (White). If I add another Lil '59 and go to a 5-way switch I could do Full neck, Split Neck and Middle (in series), N+M both Full, Split N+M (Parallel) and Full Middle. I can keep the rest of the set-up (or replace the second Vol with a blend). But that would give me a white original Cool Rail, a black original style Little '59 and a (probably white) new style Little '59. What I would like, is to have all of them original style in white with black tape. But to get that I'd need two custom shop l'59s at 150 a piece. But if I can change the top on the 59 I have now, I'd only need 1 custom shop pup.
If I get two through the custom shop, I might as well look at A5 magnets or Little Pearly Gates with A2s. I'm open to suggestions; I'm a blues/classic rock/jazz player, no heavy metal, no shred.
The only pictures I could find of how the Little buckers are constructed is in this post:
