Other than SD.............

Who makes your favorite pups? For me, being a tele, & p-90 kind of guy, I'm fan of Bill Lawrence(Bill & Becky) and Don Mare pickups too. Seymour Duncans are at the top of my list because they make so many different kinds of great pickups.

Re: Other than SD.............

Er, I am going to throw a curve here.

It does not matter how many different pickup models that Seymour Duncan or Larry DiMarzio or Lindy Fralin or Joe Barden or Paul Reed Smith or anybody else makes.

What matters is the sound that these transducer devices cause to emanate from the loudspeakers of each musician's amplifier.

Everything else is secondary.

I always wanted to look more into the DiMarzio range as i have read sooo many timea that thier units are (as a rule of thumb) more bassy/bass responsive than your ave Duncan units !

Want to see for myself if that is true . . . or not !

Re: Other than SD.............

Some DiMarzio humbuckers are definitely "more bassy" than comparable rival brands. This could well be because the DiMarzios have been tailored to the requirements of Superstrat users. For these guitars, the pickup needs to de-emphasize the treble frequencies to subdue the metallic overtones from a double-locking vibrato bridge.

Re: Other than SD.............

I love some of Lindy Fralin's pickups, especially his Vintage Hot Strat pickups, his Blues Special Telecaster pickups, the Steel Pole 43 Strat bridge pickup and his P-90's.

I love Joe Barden's pickups and have them in my G&L SC3 "Strat" and also in my '54 Tele.

I have some wonderful Van Zandt True Vintage Strat pickups that were handwound by Mr. Van Zandt himself before he passed away. They are awesome and very similar to the Ant Surfers.

And I have two sets of Tom Holmes humbuckers. Never heard a better paf style humbucker than the Holmes.

I also have a set of humbuckers from Harmonic Design that have a very classy tone. They remind me of Larry Carlton's tone, although I've never had them in a ES-335 - only in a Hamer Sunburst solid body. You don't hear much about them but they're really good.

The EMG David Gilmore set and also the EMG Vince Gil set are pretty cool. I've owned and used both of those sets and if active pickups are your thing they're very, very good.

I've never loved anything I've owned from Dimarzio although I've owned some classic Dimarzios. Don't own a single one these days.

Re: Other than SD.............

Overall I'm very happy with Duncans, but I recently made a Dave Murray strat copy and have been blown away with the DiMarzio Super D and PAF pickups. They're awesome. I even replaced the JB in one of my Jacksons with a Super D the other day.

I did that a few years back and loved the results. I love Duncans to death and they're my favorite brand, but there's always a place for the Super Distortion humbucker and Super II somewhere in my arsenal. Never tried a Dual Sound, but it looks interesting. I'm having very good results with a Moe'Jo in a basswood SG copy as well. However, I would never buy one new again for reasons I won't state because I'll probably get crucified, but it has a "double" meaning if you catch my drift. Dimarzio isn't the "creme" of the crop to me, lol.

Re: Other than SD.............

DiMarzio because of their characteristic sound. They really tend to give an axe that particlar character - not to mention how well they work in high gain amps. Also, they all have been rather quiet compared to all the Duncan's I've tried (which is why I'm not so keen on installing another).

I also like their color options and black matte finish. They also tend to be nicely priced.

Re: Other than SD.............

I use a number of different pups from different sources. Right now, I have a PRS SE Soapbar with the stock pups that I think are phenomenol. I have a ESP ltd. H-500 with a 59n and a JB in the bridge. Excellent match for super switching (24 fret). I have a Koa Tele with DMZ Area Ts. Fantastic pups. If I could have only one guitar for all applications it would be that axe and those pups. I have two guitars that I'm not totally happy with their tone: Parker PM-20 Pro with a Jazz neck and 59 bridge. I am researching other neck pups. A 2008 ash/maple AmStrat that I have tried many pups with and can't find the right sound. :(

We are very blessed to have so many wonderful and relatively inexpensive tools.

Re: Other than SD.............

the only other pickups i've ever tried for humbuckers are Gobsons, they are okay, but not nearly as good as Duncans. I do like Kent Armstrong Single Coils, and GFS Lipstick tube pups too.

Re: Other than SD.............

I'll always keep a Dimarzio Breed around in one of my guitars. I love that super middy, pushed sound. Plus it splits very well and makes my shrestick sound fat and classic! It's like a smoother JB.

Besides that, I'm 100% Duncan. :D

Re: Other than SD.............

I have pickups that I love from Seymour, DiMarzio, Gibson, Fender, and EMG. The important thing for me is that I find something that fits what I want to do with the guitar. So far I feel like I've been really lucky. There might be things out there that I'd like better, but if I went out looking, I'd do a lot of pickup swapping, researching, noodling around, and way too many sideways moves to make it worth while.

I'd rather be playing.

Your right and I should have added, many different kinds of great pups.

It's actually a Dual Sound I put in there, although it's not splittable or anything at the moment.

Re: Other than SD.............

rockfield pickups are surprisingly decent for BC rich and michael kelly OEM. i'm diggin' the rockfield SWV(a2 PAFs) set in my mockingbird, though not enough to change'em out for some duncans;)

Re: Other than SD.............

I like Duncans about as much as I like DiMarzios. Both have their hit and miss model with me.

Fender Texas Specials have always been a win with me.

The G&L's proprietary pickups with the big adjustable pole pieces (like on the ASAT and S500) are some of the ballsiest, beefiest pickups I've tried.

EMGs are also hit and miss with me but I do love the 85 and the 60A.
