our heroes' guitar rigs

How many of ya'll have bought the same guitar/amp rig as one of your guitar heroes? I know that happens alot with metal players... but, I unintentionally did.

I came into a boatload of money and decided that I was gonna up my way of living through guitar amps (I never owned a guitar amp before this) and picked out a Marshall JCM900 and a Vox AC-30, two days before I was going to pick them up, I was paging through an old Guitar World and found in the back, the guitar setup of Tom Keeley (from Thursday) and found he used a JCM900 and a Vox AC-30... I gigled for days...

anyone else got any stories like that or even have the same setup as there guitar heroes?

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

not me, but i know a guy that has:

Washburn Dime Southern Cross
Randall Warhead Full Stack
Dunlop Dime Crybaby From Hell

dunno about you, but i've seen someone else using this setup :laugh2:

~EDIT~
should add that, i found out about duncans cause most of my faves use em, particularly Slash :D

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Well a lot of the bands I like use Seymour Duncan pickups, and I always liked their tone even when I didn't knew they were using SD pickups, heck I didn't even know about aftermarked pickups when I was enjoying their tones.
My current favorite band uses JB's and Dual Recto's to get great tone, soon I will be too but not to copy their sound but to get the same heavyness guaranteed. It's in the ballpark of what I'm looking for.

I read that Thursday uses a JB/JB combo in their guitars.

One of Tom Keeley's LPs has JBs in it, I think the other guitarist, Steve Pedulla, uses stock pickups in most of his guitars, though. I think

I've read: Thursday mainly play SGs and Paulas with JB. And one have a Tele with Horail. I think their are just going to use bogner amps etc.... But I'm not sure... on their homepage are a lot of infos...

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Amp-wise, no, but guitar wise? LOL :D

2 x George Lynch ESPs
1 x Ibanez Jem (Vai's gtr)
1 x vintage Strat (thanx to Richie Blackmore)
1 x Wayne Rock Legend w/python skin ... looks like Warren DiMartini's guitar!

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Never even considered Fender a valid choice for guitars until I got into Green Day, Nirvana and Weezer...:D

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Hmm my owning of an explorer copy, i blame a certain Mr Hetfield :) other than that no.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I knew what tone I wanted by my idols. Then I hit GC, and went acroos the room from Marshalls to Vox and Boogies to Crates. Fell for the Boogie, followed the tone home.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I started looking at Mesa's because of Cobain. Up until that point the only amps I knew by name were Marshall and Peavey. After I found out what he used I started looking up the amps used by every band who's sound I liked, and ended up with a Rectifier in the end.

My Small Clone and Polychorus were also Nirvana inspired, but the rest is just stuff I usually got either 'cause it sounded cool, or it was a reccommendation from a friend.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I bought a BOSS MT-2 because someone told me Slayer used it...yeah...right...I also bought my old EMG's because of Slayer/Metallica/Zakk Wylde. Everything else is just goin my own way, I don't even own either of those anymore. Sometimes I'll catch myself seeing an In Flames video or something, and going "I want a Les Paul!" or "I want a 5150!" And then I slap myself in the face, because I'm no copycat, and every other swedish metalband uses a 5150. Nobody uses a V-amp2 as a preamp ;)

BTW, In the other GW issue with Steve Pedulla's rig, it says he uses a custom shop humbucker version of the hot rails. I thought the Invader was just that??

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I've bought a Digitech Whammy, Telecaster, and paid 100 bucks for a custom killswitch in the telecaster to grasp the tones/sounds of Tom Morello. Let me tell you, as weird and impossible as it may seem to get Morello's sounds, it really isn't that hard when you have the goods :laugh2:

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I use a Jazzmaster, and I'm a fan of Kevin Shields, Elvis Costello, Thom Yorke.
I use a Fab Tone and I'm a Mogwai fan.

None of my other equipment is really specifically artist related.

I didn't assemble my rig to be like anyone guitarist but I've adapted my influences I guess.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

my love of explorers is somewhat influenced by hetfield, but they rule in their own right. i dont think i ever bought something just cause somebody in a band i like uses it.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Hmm...I guess I've always loved Les Pauls because of Ace Frehley, my TV Special is directly attributed to my feelings for Johnny Thunders, my lefty Strat is a tribute to Jimi but I think that's about it. My amps are just kind of whatever I can deal with at any given time since I have never found the perfect rig, it seems to be getting harder instead of easier to find it too! Though I wouldn't mind having a JCM800 2210 like Michael Schenker uses.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

Tom has a backup TSL100, and uses a Line 6 DL4 Delay molder, a Morley ABY channel switcher and a Boss MS-2 Noise Suppressor

Steve uses a Bogner Ecstasy and a Matchless 30 for clean, he uses the DL$ and NS2 aswell, an Ebtech Hum eliminator, a Whirlwind A?b box, a line 6 expression pedal for is Line6 modulation modeler

He only uses the third channel for songs on his Bogner and something uses the clean channel for song like War all the time

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I bought my first Strat because of SRV and Buddy Guy. Then I wanted a Paul cause of Clapton and traded my strat for a Epi Standard (when they were good), but now I'm back to strats again. I dont know why, but now I cant get a good sound out of a neck humbucker guitar. No clarity. I tried to buy my first Fender amp cause of Stevie too, but that didnt work out, and I got a Peavey. By the way, welcome to the forum Holysmoker.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

I bought a Whammy pedal and happily discovered that I could use the piezo/magnetic pickup switch to get those signature Tom Morello "stutter" sounds. Once I got turned on to more extreme music though, I tried to make more with what I had and forge my own tone. It became less appealling for me to emulate my favorite guitarists since they all use essentially the same gear (Gibson Les Pauls, ESP's, Mesa/Boogie, Peavey). I want to be distinctive and my setup feels that way now.

Re: our heroes' guitar rigs

None of the guys that inspire me use the following.

Guitar:
- Dean EVO Special 7
- Yamaha RGX's
Amp:
- Line 6 Flex

However, Adrian Smith has a Kelly'esque guitar made by Lado (who's about 30 min drive away from where I live down south)
