Really? I'm trying to think back to my old Road King.. It had four channels but I'm not remembering how the solo boost was handled.. Of course, this was years ago and IIRC the thing had like a 7-button footswitch, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were right.

The only other Mesa amps I've ever been "intimate" with were the Mk IV, the Mk IIc, and the F-30...

...regardless, it's the way a solo boost should be done and yes, I find it essential. I really missed having that with the Orange - it would be my only real gripe about that head.

The Stilettos, Rectifiers, Lone Stars, and yes, the Road King all have the solo boost feature.

I didn't know that.

I'd still rather play a Splawn, though... With the exception of the Lone Star, I'm never as impressed by the way I sound through Mesa gear as I expect to be.

I love the lead boost, my only complaint was I could rarely actually crank the amp and I had to be real touchy with the volume. Getting the lead boost to match the master volume was always an issue for me. Of course I only really used my Splawn mostly at small bars. Since then I've moved on to bigger venues, but I have a smaller amp now that fits the band a little better.

I might just have to fire up the Splawn next weekend, since I haven't fired it up in a few months :eyecrazy:

Hopefully we get in the studio this year, I'd love to run it wide open for a little bit.

You should be in the room with one. You feel it as much as hear it. Heavy palm mutes are like someone punching you in the chest.

that's awesome. ok, so it wasn't entirely pre-conceived: I heard some clips before (not by you) that sounded thin. I think they must have chosen to dial it in like that.

I'm gonna try to record some video clips tonight. Whether I post them or not depends entirely on the video camera mic's performance.. If I can get the amp up to a decent volume without clipping the mic input, I'll run through the gears to give folks a little taste of what it can do.

The MESA Nomads also have the 'Solo' feature. It's 1 of the few things about that amp that I actually liked.

I don't know... gimme an example of what you mean by "70s rock tone."

My general idea is to get either a QR or an Ecstasy and set it up as best I can for 70s Rock sorta tone on 1 channel/mode and 80s Rock on the 3rd channel/Mode.

I've heard alot of clips of the Splawns where they totally nail the 80s Rock tone, but not really anything where they were lower gain.

I'm hopefully trying 1 in person tomorrow, so I guess I can stop bugging everyone for opinions and form 1 myself :friday:

Brow, it is an EVH amp... As I mentioned previously, I've been running been playing it on OD1, First Gear, gain under half for a great hard rock/early metal tone. The one thing Marshally it does not do very well is the mostly clean Plexi sound. It starts off at modded or boosted Plexi (which is what most of the known tones were to begin with) on the gain side. If you're playing one tomorrow, you'll see though.

I was in an 70's/80's rock/metal cover band for awhile, and still running Gear 1 OD 1. It was nice to run that for the normal parts of songs and step on the solo boost for solos.

Thanks, sounds like it should easilly do what I'm looking for

I'm thinking of using the QR (if that's what I end up getting) with my G-Major and a switching system to allow full access of switching gears etc by footswitch for full versaility.

Going by specs atleast I think I'd use Gear 1 OD1/OD2 for the lower gain 70s thing and then use Gear 2 OD1/OD2 for the higher gain stuff.

Forget about mesa!
a true 70's rock tone is all about marshall - get yourself a 70's jmp NMV (1987, 1959) or MV (2204, 2203) or a new metropoulos amp (the same circuit choices). There are jcm800 series NMV's (4 hollers) too..

I have discounted MESA at this time. I just mentioned the Nomad during the convo about MESA amps that have the Solo Boost feature.

A NMV won't be suitable as I'd need pedals for any type of gain, and I'm looking to go back to mainly a guitar -- amp setup. I also have 1 of the twin channel JCM800s and while it's a good sounding amp, it doesn't have the versatility I want.

I finally got my solo boost set on mine today. such a HUGE change when you bring it in if you arent carefull.. whooooweee!

what is a G major for ? there are several clips on youtube where they use the Gmajor.

It's a Rack mounted Multi FX Processor.

I bought it originally to use in my rack, but seeing as I could never get the rack thing to work out for me, I'm contemplating using it with the Splawn/Bogner or whatever I end up getting instead of single pedals.
