hi, the Haynes les paul manual (like a car mechanic manual for the guitar) says the the best way to get the 'hollowness' is to flip the magnet (out of phase) reverse the pickup in it's surround (semi phase corrected) and then reverse the green and black wires to wire it out of phase again.

Interesting idea about the manual - always wondered why they never had one before :lol:

Anyway, those directions make no sense to me:
Flip the magnet so the pickup is normally out of phase, then spin the magnet 180° in the ring, then reverse the wiring.

Flipping the magnet puts the pickup out of phase, so flipping the green/black does what? Puts it right back like you had it to begin with.



Might try swapping the braid and lead of my EMG 89 - see if I can get some phasing going on - or if a 9v will explode :lol:

"i swaped the braid and hot... works wonders, but theres not really much difference with the previous sound, am i missing something to get the "hollowness"?

I too switched the magnet around (in a Duncan PAF with braid shield), and found that I got this "hollow" sound best when I rolled the bridge PU volume down a bit. When both volumes are at equal levels this sound isn't as apparent, but knock that bridge PU volume down a wee bit and you'll hear a difference.

Please note that this same topic is discussed quite heavily on the Forum under the "Peter Green tone" heading. Green was well known for this, but both Freddie & BB King used their 345's/355's (with the switch doing the work) to achieve this same tone earlier.

no, in order, it goes

1 - magnet swap (out of phase)

2 - pickup reversal (back in phase, kinda)

3 - wiring the ground and hot in the opposite to normal places (out of phase again)

and i really do recommend the manual. people are idiots and need guidance. even about guitars...

thing is the pups are the stock ones on the guitar, and, guess what, 2 conductors.

what to do?

Can someone please explain to me how to wire 2 Gibson Burstbucker pro's up to set up the Out of Phase tone? Im using a push pull knob.
