Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

Lil while ago I was thinking about a problem that needs a solution and that made me remember an event from the Summer of 1976. This made me think of two more Summer 1976 events that led to a third thought about an Ibanez 3 pickup Creamy White with Chrome hardware SG Clone I saw all Summer. I could not afford it with all that went on that 15th Summer of my Life. Life IS Good but G.A.S. is bad enough in the present without old G.A.S. intrusions.

Ever think about one you missed that returns every now and then?

I have a few but a couple like the SG I have passed on examples like the original G.A.S. object. I have seen several similar Ibby SGs like that the one mentioned above a few times and I have passed everytime I have seen one. Weird though how something can stick even though no desire to really own one is there any more.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

I saw Ten Foot Pole play in 1998 and the singer was using a blue ESP horizon... it was beautiful. However, esps being so scarce in Québec, I finally bought my former Ibanez RG570 in blue metal flake in its stead. I don't like pointy superstrats much but still wish I'd find one like that someday, it's just burned into my memory for some reason.

An EBMM EVH model in transparent amber. Back in 1994-ish I played one at a GC in N. Cali when I lived out there. I almost sprung for it but knew it was out of my price range and didn't get it. I sometimes wish I did as it played and felt amazing.

I feel worse about 2 guitars I lost then any ones I never bought. I have seen and played some fantastic guitars , maybe that carved eagle Les Paul that was at Chuck Levin's in the glass case.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

Twice I had found a guitar I really liked only to find that by the time it took me to go to the store money-in-hand, the guitar had been sold. One was a Korean Washburn NX-3, already discontinued by that time and down to their last pieces. That one was unique, I played a couple others but they didn't come close to that one. The other was a Yamaha RGX520DZ, also a long-discontinued model by then, last piece as far as I knew, also gone by the time I went to get it.

Thankfully I have many great guitars, more than I deserve while I'm being honest and chances are at least a couple of them SHOULD be better in almost every fashion to the ones that slipped away but it's the not knowing that gets you, well, at least in my case not for long :D

1967: Cruising a Seattle pawn shop...old maple neck two-tone S/B Strat... $150. Blonde maple neck Tele... $125.

Do you really want to cry? Same store, same day: figured top, CSB Les Paul Standard... $195. And a bunch of old archtops too.

I have had more than my fair share of great I deals, but I remember those three like yesterday. And many more.

Thanks for reminding me...

I'm gonna go sit in the corner with my blankey and whimper for a while.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

Over the years, I've had friends with some amazing rare guitars and amps that I was too broke to even talk to them about.

I'd go back and pry all those off them. Anniversary model Gibsons, first year Matchless amps, Bogner Caveman, PRS pre Gibson lawsuit Singlecuts, etc, and I even had the first PRS McCarty in my hands and could have bought it off the rep if I'd had $1600 at the time. That's the one I'd choose. Tim Edwards, PRS's first rep, handed me that 96 McCarty in McCarty burst and told me it was the first one he was taking around to stores. Goddamm....I wish I would have called my dad and said "gimme $1600 for a guitar that will be worth thousands in a few years."

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

Back around 2001 a local dealer had a hand built Custom Shop BC Rich Mockingbird. There was no way I could afford a $3000+ guitar right out of high school (still can't) but it was by far the best playing best sounding instrument I've ever played.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

I tried to talk my brother into buying an '88 Ibanez RG560 with the intent on buying it from him later - but he wasn't sold on a pink guitar.

He ended up with a Schecter, one of the higher-end bolt-ons - made in Korea (the same model is now made in Indonesia now) and came stock with EMG 81/85 if I remember right. The RG was gone, and later listed for almost three times the price by an enterprising flipper.

Still with GAS for a superstrat, I ended up with a Jackson DK2M from a pawn shop cheap.

Circa 1990 - I was cruising a pawn shop in Grapevine, TX. and found a G & L Legacy for $250. It had not been treated kindly over the years and the pots were scratchy and so on ... but dayum ... the sound was glorious.

I was totally broke. It would be many years before I would have a spare $250.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

1976 was a great year for me, I was playing regularly with my first "real" band. It was great! So I have flashbacks of '76 all the time!!! I also had a chance to buy Paul Stanley's black Firebird from the Alive cover then, and passed because 1. I didn't like Kiss 2. Thought it was too $$$ (I'm thinking $1200 lots back then). Wouldn't mind having it today. But cool times for sure.....I did buy a Marshall Major that year....used from Leslie West.....passed on his Electra MPC and Hayman guitars, needed the amp for gigging and that's just what I did. Sorry, 1976 just gets me going every time.

Re: Out Of The Blue Ancient G.A.S.

Another one: about 2000-2001 I tried a gold ESP eclipse (the former version with the bolt-on maple neck) and it played like butter and sounded amazing... When I got back to buy it after the summer it was gone. Now these things are hard to find. Found one on Reverb for 450$ but only one non-original pick-up, non-working electronics, etc... not Worth it to me in these conditions and at that price, considering I can't try it first.
