Need some help from you guys...........I am in between these guitars which I have never tried before (except for the Les Paul faded, single cut)). Perhaps some of you had some experience with one of them. These are my choices:

Rickenbacker 650D Dakota Left-Handed Electric Guitar

or

Gibson Les Paul faded double cut left handed

or

Gibson Les Paul faded left handed

I have a Gibson SG standard, which is my main guitar and a strat (a crappy copy). I play mainly classic and progressive rock. I'll be getting in a couple of days a Voodoo amps V-plex 100w which I'll run through a mesa recto cab 4 x 12 w/ v30's and greenbacks......

I thought of getting another amp probably a combo instead of another guitar, but this amp should cover both aspects of clean and dirty.......

Any thoughts???????

Re: Out of these which one.......

I have a Yamaha SG 1500, which is basically a darn good LP Standard clone with a double cut and I love it, it plays and sounds great, but I'd go with the regular LP for the traditional look if I was doing it again. I'm not impressed with the LP double cut or Rickenbacker, it would be no contest for me. YMMV

Thanks for your reply, Ihave never tried the Rickenbacker so I can't compare it to nothing. I have played a LP which is great..........but thought of getting something that had the same warmth with a different body......

Re: Out of these which one.......

from the music you are describing...i'd go with the Hamer (usa) over any of the gibson faded series guitars...

I agree with Hoss, except I'd add that I would choose a Hamer USA over ANY Gibson LP double cut, ie., the Custom or the Standard Plus, because of:
- better quality
- Duncan pickups
- better quality
- Hamer has 2 volume controls (essential for full double humbucker mojo)
- better quality

Hoss is right, go for the hamer. they are really nice guitars.

Re: Out of these which one.......

I'll be on the look out for a used hamer. Although it has to be left handed so that limit my choices....... :yell:

Re: Out of these which one.......

I agree, of those, i'd go for a USA made hamer. Even their lowerline, non USA stuff is nice. Their higherend stuff is comparable to the best of gibsons standard line... although their more consistent about their quality, from what i hear. But i'd definitely take a USA hamer over a lowline gibson, just my 2 cents anyway....

Do you think it'd be possible for you to actually be able to play them?? Cuz thats definitely the way to pick gear.... play the types of guitars that interest you, and not just do that and order one online... but actually play several different models and types and pick the one that grabs you.... if none of the ones you play at that time do, i'd wait. Guitars are a very personal thing. If you can, i'd go play a bunch, and really really listen, and critique the sound, both plugged into an amp and acoustically. Chances are if you order from online or whatever, you will get a GOOD guitar, however.... if you want a truly excelent one, you gotta go search for it.

how about a telecaster w/ a humbucker??????

those are cool too, if its a decent tele, not like a squier or something. Again, its all personall preference. I'd try to play whatever you're considering...

Re: Out of these which one.......

Pretty much the rule is:

non USA > any faded series, epiphone etc.
USA = highend Gibson standard production line... standards, customs basically

wow the non USA Hamer over the Faded series (which is USA made). Before I got my SG standard I owned a Dean Evo Specila select (LP copy) I thought that was a good guitar but I got tired of it quickly.......I preferd the RG470 over the Dean......I do remmenber having the Hamer as achoice but I read some reviews and it seemed atleast at that time that Dean was a better choice...Now I wonder if I should of have gotten the Hamer :grumble:

Re: Out of these which one.......

What Hamer? I love the single cut Faded, basically a Special striped even further. Nothing beats a nice piece of simple mahogany but if it is a nicer Hamer you'd be crazy not to grab it.

Well I don't think of it as a special Hamer it is one of the non-USA made ones....I've never tried one, but it gets very praised.....So it must be good. I did try the faded series. I can say that it was OK. I ended up getting a Standard instead.

This is the Hamer:

Re: Out of these which one.......

Well if dollars are near the same I would prefer an American made guitar. I don't have anything against imports but the Ric or the Gibsons would certainly top the list, never seen that Ric kind of cool looking. The DC Faded didn't make me crazy that I played the body was a bit thinner than I like but again the SC Faded's that I have played were fine, I like the yellow, from a distance it looks like a brighter TV Special with some humbuckers thrown in.

I am with you on this bout the USA made gear. Nothing against imports, I loved my RG470 (thought to be a great guitar an a rival for any more expensive guitars within its range). But soince last year I sold most of my gear and started getting USA made gear. Again nothing against imported gear. That is one of the reasons I thought about the Ric and the Faded series............
