output tranny info please

so im think im going to build a single ended amp similar to the one dave hunter talks about in his tube amp book. can i use a bigger ot, like say a 25w instead of the 15w as long as the impedance is ok and it was made for single ended use?

what will that get me besides extra weight?

Re: output tranny info please

I'd be interested too. Would an underpowered OT still be able to push the speakers well, or would it be totally... well, underpowered and weak?

Re: output tranny info please

since no one has responded (is this the right forum?) -- I'll give you my gut response ...

all things being equal, I think you'd have a wider frequency response .. i.e., more bass, and more dynamic range

when I first heard the 65 Amps London, I was shocked at both the volume and the bass response, especially considering it's an EL 84 amp. I suspect one thing they did was over engineer the trannies, although I don't know for sure.

one amp along the lines of what you're talking about is the Victoria Regal

I'd be interested too. Would an underpowered OT still be able to push the speakers well, or would it be totally... well, underpowered and weak?

plenty of cheap amps -- Silvertone for example -- had notoriously wimpy trannies ...
the result?
well, combined with cheap but decent speakers, you got a somewhat limited frequency range, and when pushed, a nasty but glorious overdriven tone, compressed with lots of mids

Re: output tranny info please

So it's perfectly safe to use a more powerful OT then? And it's actually good? :s

Re: output tranny info please

sweet, thanks guys. wheres the amp crew? i dont think i smell, i showered

my thinking is with yours curly, so unless someone chimes in i think im gonna do it

Re: output tranny info please

AFAIK you cannot "Oversize" a transformer, only undersize one. As long as it has the leads that you need then price and weight are the main factors in selection. If I am wrong, hopefully someone will chime in and correct me!

Re: output tranny info please

Sure, you can use the 25 watter and you will get some some additional headroom and better frequency response (which you probably won't hear too much of because of the rolloff of the rest of the circuit and the speaker). Same result as a Bassman OT in a Pro/Vibrolux/Bandmaster or the Hammond OT's Pete put in the old Traynors...

Re: output tranny info please

Hey Jeremy - Allen Amps offers beefed up OT's for single ended amps that are very popular on the AX84 and 18 Watt forums. You might check out both of those places, plus the Hoffman Amps forums, with a search for "output transformer" and "OT". Can't remember where, but there was a really good technical (but understandable) discussion of OT's in one of those places just recently.

IIRC a super-sized OT won't give you more power exactly, but it should provide a wider range of frequency response just as Gary said.

Re: output tranny info please

Jeremy,

Of course, as all have said here, you can safely use a larger transformer. However, a higher power rated transformer will likely be wound with heavier wire, and could in fact, have less bandwidth than a smaller one. That, by no means, does not say that a large transformer cannot have wide bandwidth, but it may be more difficult to achieve. That said, with the response of guitars and guitar amps in general, I do not see a problem here.

But make no mistake about, they will sound different. Contrary to popular opinion, there is an amazing amount of black magic in transformer design - there are are so many parameters, and so many ways to skin the same cat.

Recalling what you know about the sound of rectifier tubes, I'm sure you know the better sounding transformers as well. Using an overpowered one could make an amp sound cleaner and easier to listen to, whereas a matched one might sound a little looser and dirtier, which sometimes will make people think it's more powerful - all depends what you're after.

Re: output tranny info please

+1 to what Curly said. You're likely to get better low end response with a bigger transformer. As long as the impedance ratio is correct, and it's designed for single-ended use, going bigger than required power is not a problem.

Re: output tranny info please

with a larger tranny, think hiwatt. one of the reasons they sound the way they do.

Dude, you've always been a jeanyus in my eyes. Why you askin questions like this? la la la la la la

Re: output tranny info please

being a genius usually involves knowing that bouncing ideas off others is a good idea. its always good to get other opinions and there are cats on here who know their stuff.

heres some dancing sheep for my brother jolly

Re: output tranny info please

I think you'll get extra bandwidth and extra volume partially because of the extra bandwidth IMHO. It will sound louder and beefier. Just like a hiwatt. Could be cleaner too like Noth said as well.

Is that the main reason Silvertone's sound so good?

Two words...

Mercury Magnetics

im either going mm or allen. id like to go mm but the cost difference is astounding.

basically i need something with a 4k ohm primary to 4 & 8 ohm outs

Re: output tranny info please

Does any musical instrument amp maker use toroidal transformers, either power or output? They can be pretty amazing.
