Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

This actually seems like a guitar I would really want to try out. The chambered mahogany body is something that not many guitars have

Actually I would really want to know of more guitars with chambered mahogany bodies :D

So the scale is a bit strange but I guess it fits the "hybrid" idea that they are going for.

The price could be a bit lower though. I would put it at $1200, and that as a good price.

The fishman power bridge is only a plus of the guitar IMO. The chambered mahogany body and slightly longer scale make it a very good electric guitar IMO. Nice rich thick sounding...

What do you guys think?

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

I saw one at the Guitar Center on the other side of town when I was there Sunday. I didn't have time to plug in and listen to it, but I picked it up. Feels very nice. Maybe a little chunkier neck than I like, but my neck profile preference leans toward slim.

These days it's hard to find any high quality US made guitar under $2,000. I'd say Ovation did pretty well keeping the cost down. I predict a flame maple top version will become available later, with a price tag over $2,000.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

I noticed that the fingerboard seems quite wide, maybe that's what makes the neck seem larger. It's probably a wide thin.(?)

Yeah, I don't think ovation can allow for very high prices on an electric guitar since it doesn't have its name related to electrics.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

I saw those in the GC ad yesterday. I want to try one!!

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

OMO on this, Kaman, parent company of Ovation and Hamer, partners with GC to basically produce a Hamer Duotone in a new package under the Ovation banner. I bet it is a decent product. Life Is Good for Kaman and GC no?

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

wow, I had no Idea about this Kaman group of companies. Well, it's the truth about marketing I guess.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

I checked one out at Guitar Center, they had a big display as soon as you walk in. Not impressed at all. Wavy finish, crappy fretwork and totally unimpressive electric sound. The one they had didn't work at all 'cause the batteries were dead... not even the humbuckers work when the batteries die. The VG strat is way better, plus you get tuning choices at the twist of a knob!

The acoustic powerbridge sound was decent though, once they replaced the batteries. I could see this guitar selling for $600-$700, and theres no way it would compete with a Hamer, totally different animal and nowhere near the quality.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

Is it US made?

I never figured it would equal Hamer quality. I'm thinking they are just reworking the Duotone idea.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

Yeah, it is US made... I guess BTMN is right, just a cheaper version of the duotone afterall.

Now what about that Godin Montreal! :D

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

Hey fingerace, Hamer is a 10 man shop making high-end guitars in the $3000-$10,000 range. No way they are making those VXTs. If you've ever held a Hamer you'd see the difference instantly.

Kaman music is a distributor along with about 1000 other brands like Gretsch drums and Sure microphones. Ovation has tried making electrics since the 1970s, so it's not too surprising to see them try it again.

I was thinking about a guitar that had more capabilities like the VG strat or Variaxe, so the VXT was worth checking out based on the ads I saw that said it was the "dawn of a new sound" but the reality is that it's the dawn of nothing new. It's basically a low-end guitar with a piezo pickup on it.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

GS, of course Hamer is not making those! I never thought that... The truth is I haven't even seen a Hamer up close before so I don't know if they live up to their reputation.

Well, I guess I can forget the VXT... and start learing more about the Godin montreals.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

The one I saw at GC had no finish issues that I could see.

The neck didn't feel overly wide. It was deep. Almost a U shape.

I didn't see any problems with the fretwork or other workmanship issues. The action felt real nice. If I'd had the time, I'd have enjoyed plugging it in and taking it for a spin.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

It would be really nice of you guys over in the US to check it out for us here at the forum. (ok, maybe it's only me who is so curious but it doesn't matter :D)

I thick those Godins seem a better choice now, I should have stareted a thread about them instead of the VXT...

btw Kosh, you have a very nice guitar collection!!

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

Ok, so very late with a quick reply. I got one maybe 8 years ago for about $760 new, with nice case. Mine is sunburst and without any flaws regarding finish or workmanship. Here is link to them making them in Connecticut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiqGxExVJkc
Light weight, comfortable. With the SD pickups it is wonderful. Need to use a TRS splitter to get full benefit, and acoustic processor helps with fishman pickup. Wish it had tone for that, but what the heck. ovation 003crop.jpg

It's nice when I can win an award on my first day here. Thank you so much. I will proudly display it.

Welcome to the board.

Don't mind the grumblers about the necro thread.

Shoot some new shots of that guitar front and back and start your own thread telling us about you and any other cool guitars you have. :headbang:

I wasn't grumbling. It was just funny.

Cool guitar. I like the shape. Can definitely see the acoustic influence on the style.

Re: Ovation hybrid guitar (with SD stock pups)

No foul intended as I figured you would not be the only one. I see as a new guy he bumped a couple of old threads. This one 8 years old. Always interesting and makes me wonder if those were search results to keywords like his guitar here or Cort in another thread.
