Hey guys,

Got any advice on a GREAT overdrive pedal for under/around $200 (used or new)?

I play bluesy/rock and I'd like a good range out of the pedal, but I'll mostly be playing with it in Black Crowes/Stones territory.

I have a TS808 RI right now, and it's pretty good, but I think that with the right pedal, I would be much happier with my rig.

Any help is awesome. Thanks fellas!

Re: Overdrive advice?

Have you considered having your pedal modded by John Spina?

Re: Overdrive advice?

Something like a Fulltone Fulldrive or a G2D Cream Tone or Custom Overdrive will do what you're asking.

Also, +1 on the Spina mod suggestion :)

I have a Spina modded TS9 and in my opinion, it sounds alot better than the stock pedals do (to my ears atleast)

Re: Overdrive advice?

if you LIKE the 808 look into a Fulltone Fulldrive II...imagine the best Tubescreamer ever but with LOTs more options, you could even go with the 10th ann version and have more options! The Fulltone OCD aslo gets rave reviews and is around $160. I have a Lovetone Brown Source that is a killer pedal, they are not being made anymore and will run you more than $200 but they are well worth it IMO...there is reissue from Lovetone but it's put in a bigger box and also has a 2nd channel that is fuzztone (the best Fuzztone ever) but it's over $500. There are quite a few cool boxes from Menatone that will run you right around that $200 give or take.

Rich has a few Analogman Pedals...a Sunface NKT and a Maxon SD9 with the Analogman "super" mods...the Sunface is a Sunface is a Fuzzface clone with a few needed mods, the Maxon SD9 is sort of like a TS-9 with more hair, they have a thicker, more saturated distortion sound.

The suggestions I made are all great pedals but you really need to just try as many pedals as you can until you get what you like.

Re: Overdrive advice?

Thanks for all the help!

I have definitely thought about getting it modded. I'm not really sure how to feel about the 808. I know what kinda tone I want, but I have tried out VERY few pedals, and absolutely NO 'good' ones (boutique-type stuff).

The OCD was my first thought, because I've heard incredible things about it. I'm looking for a smooth, thick overdrive. If I had to pick a song to describe it, check out the solo in "Girl From a Pawnshop" by the Black Crowes. It sounds like Marc is using an LP, but you can get the idea. I also dig a lot of Santana lead tones and Allmans stuff, but that wide of a range with that amount of money doesn't seem very possible?

Thanks again.

Boss SD-1. either modded, or an old MIJ one (i'm SURE the MIJ ones are smoother!)

even if it means getting two cheaper pedals, for more of a range of tones?

if you want a one-stop pedal though, i hear a lot about the klon centaur, EH hot tubes, english muff'n, or crowther hotcake :)

Re: Overdrive advice?

check out the Hermida Zendrive. Guitar Player reviewed it and said it was the smoothest overdrive/distortion tone they'd ever heard, to the point of almost being too smooth for some players.

Re: Overdrive advice?

The Hermida had come to mind. Anyone know where I could get some clippage?

Re: Overdrive advice?

Fretfire has both the Zendrive and the Mosferatu...I'm sure he has a clip or two sitting around somewhere...CALLING FRETFIRE!

Re: Overdrive advice?

I'm with Christian on the new Fulltone FDII 10th Anniversary. It's versatile, sounds great, looks great, and if you want to sell it in a few years, you'll get 100% of your money out of it.

If RID loves that Lovepedal Eternity, it's something I'll check out if I see it somewhere.

Re: Overdrive advice?

Try Indyguitarist ( www.indyguitarist.com )
Brian mods pedals and also makes his own (which r very original)
His Blue Fuzz is very versatile and i think the Fat Axx is more like a tubescreamer but more open and thicker. Check out the soundclips.

Re: Overdrive advice?

Your description absolutely SCREAMS Zendrive to me! You can find some clips here at the Hermida website, and they are pretty good representations of what the pedal can do. http://hermidaaudio.com/products.html

I did have some clips recorded running the pedal into my GuitarPort on Soundclick, but it looks like I've taken them down.

BTW, thanks for the heads up about this thread Capo.

Re: Overdrive advice?

no problem man...I'm thinking of going the Hermida route like you did

Mosferatu+Zendrive....man...add a delay to that and a wah, that's all I'd ever need!

If you can find one, Stamps Drive-o-matic. Two, count'em two channels, separate levels, presence, and loose/tight voicing

Don't forget Alf is supposedly going to release a Mos/Zen 2-in-1 pedal in the near future. That'd be a killer box!

Re: Overdrive advice?

Just listened to the clips of the Zendrive...

That is almost EXACTLY what I'm hearing in my head....SWEEEET!!!

The Hermida sounds like a winner. Thanks FretFire and Capo and whoever else suggested it!!

Obviously, I't'd still be great to get some more suggestions...never bad to have more to choose from...but this sounds like it's the stuff. Thanks again guys!
