Got my music room set up real nice and plugged in all of my overdrive and distortion pedals and compared them to each other through my blackface Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb. The PR has a Celestion G1265, the DR has a Celestion G12H30 and I also used a Matchless one 12 cab with an 8 ohm Celestion Alnico Silver from the 60's - the AC30 speaker.

I used my Strat with the EMG David Gilmore set, my '54 Tele with the Joe Bardens, my Strat with a single Duncan 78 and my Strat with the Duncan Surfer/Surfer/CS Tele Hot set.

Guess which pedal I liked best? The green channel of the Jemini! Sounded like Eric Clapton with Cream when I plugged in a humbucker and sounded just awesome with Strat single coils too!

The red channel of the Jemini is really cool too and it sounds even better with humbuckers than it does with single coils, IMO, and was a little brighter and more modern. With the 78, I got instant Steve Vai sort of tone, the way when I plug a Strat into the '69 it gives me instant Jimi Hendrix tone and the TS-808 gives me instant SRV overdrive.

But it was the green channel of the Jemini that was the stand out in this shoot out.

The Jemini has such a big deep full sound that it made all of my other pedals sound a little bright, thin and lacking in bass - even though I was totally happy with the tone of those pedals before getting the Jemini.

I could goose the level of the DS-1 and cut back on the tone/treble to get me into more of the huge Jemini tone, and I could get the TS-808 into that territory too, by setting it for much more overdrive than I normally use - but the DS-1 and TS-808 never sounded quite as full and deep as the Jemini.

The '69 pedal has always sounded like the best Fuzzface I've ever heard - but it sounded fizzy and spitty compared to the Jemini. The '69 did sound the most like Jimi Hendrix though.

This was very interesting to me. That Jemini pedal is something else and IMO, it was simply the most fun to play and the one I kept coming back to.

I did compare the DS-1 and TS-808 and TS-9 to each channel of the Jemini. The rumor is that the Jemini is based on Steve's modded DS-1 and TS-9.

Neither Jemini channel really sounds like a stock Tubescreamer or stock DS-1to me. Maybe a heavily modded TS-9 or DS-1, but not stock ones like I have.

The DS-1 with the level and drive set much higher than I normally use and the tone backed off sounded the most like the Jemini green channel of all the pedals - but not exact.

I'm going to guess that the Jemini green channel is loosely based on the tone of a modded
DS-1 one with more bass and more overdrive. But that's just a guess.

With the Jemini, I could not clean up my guitar tone to my satisfaction by lowering the guitar's volume control though. The stock DS-1 is the only pedal that allowed me to turn my guitar volume control down to 5 and clean it up to almost sparkling clean. None of the other pedals allowed me to do that, including the green channel of the Jemini.

Oh: which speaker sounded the best? Of the three, my old Celestion G12 Alnico Silver in the big single 12 Matchless cabinet sounded best of all. #2 was the G12H30. #3 was the G12-65 - it's a little to smooth and the G12H30 has more bite and crunch.

The Matchless cab is pretty deep and big and the Celestion Alnico really sounds deep and full -
much better than it sounds in my Deluxe Reverb cab which is much smaller than the Matchless.

I've been thinking all along that the Celestion Alnicos were to bright for blackface Fender amps - I was wrong. If the cab is big enough, I guess they sound just fine!

I liked the TS-808 better than my stock MIJ TS-9. The tone is a little more open and spacious - just a little.

I also have a Spina modified TS-9 that John made into a TS-808. Sounds exactly like my TS-808.

Wish I'd thought to plug in my old big box Ratt and Duncan Pickup Booster. I forgot to try them.

It was fun! My girlfriend is away and I have time on my hands.

My ears are still hissing and ringing like crazy though. It's amazing how loud a little 20 watt amp can be. Maybe not loud and clean but for a test like this I wasn't going for clean. :cool2:

Boy - I wish somebody else here would try out a Jemini.

Come on guys - I was right about the Verbzilla! :naughty:

interesting review for sure!!!

glad you're getting along so well with that Jemini pedal!!!

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

Throwing the '69 in there is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison IMO, but other than that nice review. It's cool that you like the Jemini so much, especially compared to the other pedals.

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

Well, once I return the crappy BBE Free Fuzz and sell my cheapo 7 string, I guess I'll have to buy this thing since it sounds pretty much awesome.

Nice review as usual Lew! Thanks for the info!

Seems weird to hear you talk about the Satch and Vai pedals lately. You have always seemed like a simpler is best guy to me :) No offense, I love your reviews on them. Keep em coming!

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

Nice stuff Lew!

I would like to try the Jemini but the truth is that for a dual OD I just can't imagine it's any better than my AnalogMan King of Tone, and I just love that pedal so much! I also have been into the ZVEX Box of Rock lately...thats a killer pedal with a footswitchable boost thats as good as the distortion side!

I have a few dirt boxes in my sights lately and the Jemini is on that list simply because of your reviews!

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

I use TS-808 exclusevily with my Marshall JMP thru G12-65 Basketeave.
I was about to get rid of the DS-1 till Lew clued me into waht a great Clean Boost it is, and then the thread about useing a clean Boost in front of the pedalboard chain was the iceing on the cake. Now I use the DS-1 on gain set to zero as a boost i front of the pedals on my pedalboard, and then run a Fulltone OCD at the end of the cahin for however much gain i need to dial in .
I'll use a Rat more for an coulored effect to achieve a tone that is famous.
I've never heard of a Jemini.

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

Thanks for taking the time to write up that review Lew! I've been looking real hard at the Jemini pedal. It's got a good price for what it is. I haven't read a bad review of it yet. I think it would be a great a seller if it didn't have Steve Vai's name on it. Don't get me wrong the guy is an awesome player and has more skills than I'll ever dream of having, but more often than not, his tone sounds way to processed.

Anyway, back to the point. I think this pedal will make its way on to the board of the small practice rig I'm going to put together. Along w/ a Plexitone, a Verbzilla, A DL-4, a wah, chorus, and maybe a fuzz and modded TS. Still haven't decided on the amp yet. But it will more than likely be an EL84 or 6L6 based low wattage amp ran into a 1x or 2x12.

The truth is, my personal tone is just a great guitar, a George L cord, and a great amp. That's it.

I don't really rely on any overdrive pedals for my tone.

But I do like to fool around with them and do have a bunch of great ones - just in case.

Maybe the only great pedal I've never owned is a Klon Centaur. But I've owned the Zendrive - and sold it within a couple of weeks.

I think if a guy had a great amp like a non-master volume Deluxe Reverb or the like, the Jemini will sort of turn that amp into a three channel amp.

Clean = pedal off.

Vintage Overdrive = Jemini green channel

Modern Overdrive to Shred = Jemini red channel

The Jemini has a very musical and pleasing tone, at least to me. It's just a blast to play through and real easy to find great tones. It's a real plug in and play kind of pedal and seems to sound good no matter what settings I use.

Now a pedal like the Zendrive is much harder, for me, to dial in a killer tone. Takes a lot of tweaking, IMO. And once I finally got it figured out, it just wasn't for me. Although I love some of the players who use it, like Robben Ford, I just didn't have a lot of fun with the Zendrive.

The Jemini IS a lot of fun!

I have a Vox Satchurator coming. Hope it shows up before I have to leave town next week for an important recording project: my first solo guitar CD!

Re: Overdrive shootout: Jemini, DS-1, TS-9, TS-808, Fulltone '69...

Lew,

Let me ask this...on the red channel, it's more high gain but how is the overall tone? I have found that a lot of highish gain pedals tend to go for a really modern tone and since a lot of these 2 channel OD/Dist pedals have one vintageish and one high gain channel for me the 2nd (higher gain) channel often goes un used...can a player like you really get some use out of the hot channel on the Jemini?

Also, off topic and just FWIW, don't bother with a Klon...I never saw what the fuss was about myself and have tried them more than once!

Wasn't that cool?!?! I don't play anything like that but Steve is one of my favorite players. He just seems like he's one level higher than all the other "virtuosos". He really IS a virtuoso!

I think both channels are voiced similarly. But the red channel allows for alot more gain. Or else you can set it for less gain and sounds very similar to the green channel.

BTW, when I play through the green channel I don't sound anything like Steve does playing through the green channel. I sound more like Eric Clapton or Billy Gibbons or something. You know: a humbuckers through a cranked Marshall kinda thang...even if I'm using my Strat with single coils.

That is an awesome video. Steve actually seems to have aged really well - comes across as someone who would be great fun just to hang out and kick back with too.
