Hey Guys

My head is a 300watt Randall G3. It has a tube in the pre-amp.

Today I turned down the amps volume and turned up the volume on the BOSS GE-7 (plugged into the input, not the FX loop). The volume went back up, but it went back up with alot more tone. Is it safe to overload the input on a Hybrid amp? (the volume was boosted by 15db on the GE-7).

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

It generally won't do anything too much. I can turn the preamp all the way up in my hybrid H&K and all it does is open up the sound more. My amp is also made very well, I dunno bout Randalls. Running a solid state pedal all the way to push the preamp is def not gonna give you an amazing sound. Pushing solid state makes harsh sound.

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

Well, boosting the input is getting good results for me, i just wanna know if its safe to do it on a hybrid amp.

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

The tube in the new Randalls with the Valve Dynamic power section is a 12AT7 driving the power section, it isn't in the preamp.

But, driving the preamp with pedals won't hurt it.

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

Yeah, it's safe. I occasionally use a solid state pedal to overdrive a solid state pedal just to create unique tones.

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

I did it almost every gig with an OD pedal or a GE7 with my hybrid Marshalls when I had 'em, it sounded good and didn't hurt the amp.

Re: Overdriving a Hybrid Amp

Great, thanks for the advice guys. And I had no idea the tube was in the power-amp section, i thought all hybrids have a tupe in the pre.

I play prog-rock, in the style of dream theatre, spocks beard, anything sorta heavy with lots of keyboards to back it up, and sometimes unison the riffs I play.

I only use the randall on the clean channal (Bass 3, Mid 6, Treb 6). The randall goes into a Marshall 1960A cab, the matching Randall cab sounded like crap to me, so I tried it with a marshall and it was heaps better. There is way too much bass on the randall, so I EQ it out with a BOSS GE-7.

For my dirty sounds, it comes from whatever pedal is on the pedalboard, I have ****ty dist pedals atm cos $$$ is tight.
