overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

I wonder what this would be like, winding the pup up to, say, 10k. One coils still slightly hotter (not sure whether it should be proportional to a regular PG or if the discrepancy should be constant).

Or maybe a PG without the stagger wind? MORE of a stagger?

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

Put me down also for a hotter PG, something around 10-12K. Another thing I'd like to see would be a Lil' Custom Custom for strat and a Cool Rails set for Tele. :burnout:

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

I actually like the sound of the JB jr in a strat, might be good to have one for a tele.

I don't actually have a tele, I'm just sayin'.

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

I got to have a 10-12K A2 bucker. Or a bucker with rails!!!!

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

Idea for Seymour: set up an online program that lets us design our own pickups. Complete form, hit enter, 4-6 weeks your pickup arrives. Feed the beast, and make money!

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

it's called the custom shop

but i do agree that a suggestion box could work

I'd like to see a PG with some twang

or a humbucker that sounds like a hopped up gretsch mini humbucker, but when split can produce either tele or p-90 tones

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

An Alnico II Pro Mini-Humbucker for the neck, wound to match up with a SM-3 (A5) in the bridge.

I'd love to wind my own, but I'm 3k miles away. Maybe I'll have MJ wind one for me, someday.

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

If you are looking for a 10-12K A2 bucker, why not have MJ wind you a 59/CC Hybrid like the one I just ordered. Do a search for Hybrid or look up Bach To Rock posts on this pickup.

Re: overwound PG? More user day pup ideas..

The cool thing about the Hybrid as opposed to just an overwound PAF is that the sound does not become garbled.
Each wire guage has it's optimum range of winds/resistance for producing great tone & response
PAF's are wound with 42 guage wire and when you get above 9k for both coils the tone gets garbled and you start to lose all of the things that are magical about a PAF.
The Customs are wound with a 43 guage(slightly thinner) wire which sounds best around 14k for both coils.
When you fabricate a Hybrid with one coil of each type you get a single pickup with a blend of the best characteristics of each individual pickup.
Plus... with mis-matched coils you get a more even and less peaky response since each coil has it's own resonant peak.
