Overwound SSL-1

Has anyone ever heard an overwound SSL-1? It's my understanding that the SSL-5 was originally supposed to be like a hotter SSL-1 for David Gilmour(http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-tone-garage/how-to-sound-like-david-gilmour/), but it's wound with 43 AWG and IMO is a lot fatter than an SSL-1, to the point of not sounding especially Stratty (all punch, no bite). The production model is wound with 42 AWG and has a DC resistance of 6.5 but is still a rather bright pickup. When I last installed SSL-1's, it didn't appear that the the bobbin was maxed out. I'm thinking about ordering a set from the Custom Shop that overwound with 42 AWG, but wanted to see if anyone had already tried it out first.

Re: Overwound SSL-1

I would be curious to hear about the results of that myself.

Re: Overwound SSL-1

I had an overwound SSL-1 & to me it pretty much sounded like a SSL-5 after? Of course the pickup I had done was rewound by my buddy on his makeshift hand guided winder & it was so long ago that I can't even remember what kind of wire he used, I'm 99% sure it was 42 AWG though, maybe if you went through the custom shop there would be a bigger difference??? Cool question!!!

Re: Overwound SSL-1

Maybe do a full calibrated set? 6.5ish for the neck, a little more for the middle (RWRP, if you fancy), and a little more at the bridge? Say, 7.5 - 8kish?

Re: Overwound SSL-1

ive done plenty of things like that and it can be really cool, but you can also go too far. 7.5k is a nice wind that adds a little mids and softens the high end without changing the character too much.

Re: Overwound SSL-1

Duncan charges quite a bit to rewind a pickup......more than the price of a new production pickup, so I think you'd be better off selling your SSL-1 bridge and replacing it with a Surfer Custom bridge. Even though it appears too hot on paper, it's still stratty....just ballsier.

i really love the surfer set but wish it was flat pole, i keep planning on winding a flat pole vintage wind set for myself but havent gotten around to it

How do you know you'd get the wire tension or layering pattern right when you go to do your own wind of a Duncan pickup? Aren't those things together critical aspects of the pickup's voicing?

I actually have a set of Lollar Special S already, so if raw wind count around A5's is all that's essentially at play then I suppose I already have a set of overwound SSL-1s.

i dont know itll be like a duncan but i know itll be a vintage wind flat pole a5 set with the specs i want. im not trying to copy a surfer exactly, just make a great set of pups. actually i know the neck wont be the same since its gonna be wound with #42 heavy formvar while the other two will be wound with #42 formvar
