Oxidation Problem

Hey Everyone,

I gotta friend who moved to the bay area in Cali a few years back. Ever since, he's noticed his chrome/nickel hardware on his Music Man Bass has started oxidizing. Never had this problem myself so I didn't know how to advise him. What can he do to restore his hardware and prevent future further oxidation?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Oxidation Problem

Their is a product called Gorgomyte that will help restore the shine to the frets. Not sure what will help to prevent it except to use that Gorgomyte cleaning cloth after every other string change

Re: Oxidation Problem

Dunlop and Fender sell an oxidation inhibitor but it's more for preventative maintenance.

It's probably the humidity of the area he moved to... he needs to dehumidify his jam room and use the oxidation inhibitor and even that might not stop it.

I bought my 87 Les Paul from a guy who lived in New England...the bridge on that ****er was so oxidized it hardly functioned.... that's just part of the nature of metal parts in some cases...

Re: Oxidation Problem

^^ Not the humidity per se, more likely the SALT WATER. Coastal areas are almost always harder on metal parts of any kind, not just guitars.

Keeping the humidity in check is really most of what you can do as an "end user". Some preventive maintenance helps, but only unti lp it starts, then you may as well save the money becasue as soon as it starts it`s spread speed increases exponentially because every molecule affected increases the surface area exposed to corrosion.

There is no real way to stop it once it`s started, it can only be slowed down. As soon as it gets through the plating , however, you need to start looking for a replacement part ASAP.
