P-90 Hum reduction question

I read on another forum that someone had put nickel covers on their P-90's and it reduce the hum by 90%. Can any body verify that this would work? I love the sound of my P-90's but the hum is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

Paging Frank Falbo.

When is the Fishman Fluence range going to expand to include a P90 replacement? [Grovel, plead, bribe.]

If your P-90's have plastic covers, you can shield them by putting aluminum foil inside, poking out holes for the pole pieces.

A few thoughts with p90s.

1) Are there dimmers on your circuit? Those make everything noisier, but with p90s they can be a nightmare. This obviously only works at home.
2) ISP decimator set low, first thing in your signal chain can be a lifesaver.
3) Learn to play with and find that facing different angles can drastically reduce hum. While this might not work playing a gig, during the song, you can cut hum in between by finding a quiet spot during sound check and putting a dot of tape on the floor.
4) shield your electronics cavity as well as use ns covers.

I want to try the nickle covers, but my main p90 guitar has thorn stapletops in it.

Personally, for playing out, the decimator would be my weapon of choice.

Re: P-90 Hum reduction question

I have to say - I have never really had problems with P-90's and hum. except if to close to a speaker/mic/computer etc…

Try simple positioning first.

After that - focus on the music and not the noise.

After that, maybe P-90's are not for you….

Some places have dreadful wiring. A few places I have played have been a problem. In those cases a noise gate, barely on, has saved my bacon. Rheostats on the same circuit, dirty power, a whole host of things. I wouldn't discount p90s, but they can hum something awful in the wrong location.

Re: P-90 Hum reduction question

I guess my point then is use hum bickers, or a hum bucking P-90-ish pup.

At the end of the day, P-90's are singles. They Hum. That's life. I'll admit to never having that issue, but that it exists.
