p 90 or humbucker.

I am trying to decide whether to equip my es 335 style guitar with p 90's or humbuckers. I will most likely go with a antiquity humbucker or some form of a p 90. Could you guys maybe lead my in the right direction to deciding? What are the pros and cons of each? I know we are talking about two entirely different pickups but id like to hear your opinions. The music i would be playing is very vast, but i tend to keep my guitar a little on the clean side with not to much distortion.

Thanks for any help!!!

Re: p 90 or humbucker.

im thinking that humbuckers are more versatile. from what ive played, p90s are good with both cleans and distortion, but so are some humbuckers. from what ive read, p90's are very middy and kind of a mix between single coils and humbuckers, but not in the way mini humbuckers or single coil sized humbuckers are. plus, if your guitar is routed for hummbuckers, the only p90 in the seymour duncan line that will fit is the "phat cat". you have hundreds of choices for humbuckers, though.

Re: p 90 or humbucker.

So far its not routed for anything because i made it. Thanks for the info, any one else with any opinions??

Also could someone tell me the difference between a seth lover humbucker and an antiquity humbucker, also are those good pickups? What about the antiquity p 90?
thanks

Hi, maybe my recent comparison of several bridge humbuckers and Gibson P-94s in a Tokai Love Rock will give you an idea how big or small the difference is. Of course an ES-335 sounds different than a Les Paul, and a P-94 is not a P-90, but listening to the samples might be a start.

Re: p 90 or humbucker.

You could think of p90s as high output single coils that includes the single coil buzzing effect. Humbuckers give more thicker sounds, meaning bassier and low mids. P90s and humbuckers should be able to do anything you want.

Re: p 90 or humbucker.

I would say that a P-90 is able to sound deeper, warmer and at the same time clearer than a humbucker which always colors the natural sound in some way, especially at the neck which is a constant "problem zone" for humbucker equipped guitars. In general it's a unique mix of Strat clarity and Les Paul crunch with a distinctive and characteristic middle position sound that I like very much. By the way, semi-acoustics with P-90s are very interesting guitars in my opinion.

And if you cannot hear a difference in the sound clips, listening with good headphones or via your stereo instead of the PC speakers might help. But they are not as dramatic as you might have expected them, that's also true.
