i have an older model ibanex talman (the solid body models) with p-90s in it. im really looking forward to swapping out the stock p'ups.

my style is around pearl jam/weezer (my tone is closer to mike mccreedy)

what pickups would you recommend for this situation?. i was thinking duncan custom in the bridge and vintage in the neck. would this be good?..

thanks!

Re: P-90 p'up recomendations

I have just tried the vintage neck and bridge and they sound really great. Since the bridge model is "overwonded" respect to the neck they balance very well. All the positions are very usable. The sound is middy, clear and powerfull. And the distorsion it is very nice too: agressive but retainig a bit of clarity.

I've been using the Fralin -10%/+5% set. But I also really liked the Duncan Hot N and Custom B that originally came in that guitar too...a '96 Hamer Gold Top. I just wanted something a little more transparent and less snarly. But those Duncan's could really rock...great for ZZ Top type stuff.

Scott_F has some unusual combination of Duncan P90's that he seems to really like...hopefully he'll join in and comment.

I have the set Lew mentioned above, Hot & Custom, in my '93 Hamer Special (mahogany/no cap). I really like the pups, great snarl, grit & bite. I believe they would do what you want them for (PJ, Weez). I haven't tried the Vintage so I can't draw a comparison for ya there, but the H&C rock. Good luck.

Peace,

Thanks for the confirmation Darrin! You still lovin' that tweed Bassman? Do you get a chance to open it up a little and crank that thing? Sounds like a mini-Marshall...right? I love those amps! Lew

Yeah Lew, It's got some nads. Playing that '93 Special thru it at near-sonic volume I sound just like Angus Young. Well, almost. :laugh2: Hope your wife had a good birthday  Back to the thread Lew, what's your take on the Vintage and Antiquity P90's. Been there?

Peace,

Darrin

Re: P-90 p'up recomendations

I actually asked someone at Seymour about this issue. I was thinking about dumping the p-100's in a Paul for something with a little zip AND personality. I was thinking of focussing this axe on Blues/Blues Rock (and maybe some Jazz!) through a Fender Pro jr. mostly. I really couldn't decide between the following:

Two hot p-90's - for the "fat" factor. Big fat blues and jazz....

Two Customs - for the total bad-to-the-bone sound. slightly hotter blues and rock

nHot / bCustom - The SD guy's rec (and your's apparently). fat neck, rockin bridge.

Or.....

nCustom / bHot - I thought this might be cool. Dodge the mud by putting the more even, higher treble pup in the neck and the keep the bridge fat with the hot. I could balance output (which isn't that different) by careful height adjustment. I generally like very even tone between neck and bridge.

Thoughts? Comments?

Re: P-90 p'up recomendations

Another popular combination is a Custom neck in the bridge, and a Vintage neck in the neck. You might be able to balance it out even better if you went with a custom neck in the bridge and a hot neck in the neck. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the specs on the hot model, but that would probably sound cool.

thats what scott has in his prs, vintage neck, custom neck in the bridge.
personally i really like a vintage neck and custom bridge, nice neck and a rowdy bridge tone with more beef than the neck version

Vintage Neck Custom Bridge is what I have in my LP Special, been there for quite a while and likely to be there for a lot longer.

Re: P-90 p'up recomendations

Ive just bought a Les Paul Special myself but I have BIG problems with these SQUEALING Gibson pups...Anybody can give some advice HOW they got rid of that problem ( Do Seymour Duncan pups solve it or is it inherent to single coil pups ???)
Apart from that, other P-90 p'up recomendations anyone?
Thanks in advance,
Frenchy

Re: P-90 p'up recomendations

Z90's will solve that problem.

I changed back to them after trying some SD PhatCat... But those pups did not do what I needed, so I changed back!
