P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

From the top:

Hamer
PRS
.....that little Dillion Goldtop I had friggin' SMOKED....SD Custom 3s in it, upgraded electronics. Very nice light LP, but it was one of the "lawsuit" models....not sure if the new ones are the same quality.

I want another P90 guitar...those SD Customs are badass!!! "Can't You Hear Me Knockin' " never sounded the same since I sold it :(

That new PRS looks really tempting, but I'd have to play one first as I'm not particularly fond of that "wide fat" neck.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

the reverend slingshot is a good contender if you can get pass the design.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

I agree that if you're seriously considering it, then look for a used Hamer ... stock SD pickups, and if you buy wisely, you won't lose if you resell later.
One thing to note is that Hamer changed the neck profile some time in the mid 90s from a smaller radius to a more Gibson type, flatter profile - that's what I'd look for.

I have a nice Goldtop (carved top), but the slab top Specials like Hoss posted above should be in your price range. The all mahogany ones will put you right in that LP jr. territory.

here's a pic of my GoldTop:

I always think P90s have a perfect tone for slide - fat and bitey, but just clean enough to cut better.

Of course that tone works for a lot of other stuff too. And P90s just look so darn cool!!! :)

The PRS SE series is built VERY well for the money...they have a solid mahogany body or one with a maple top (both of which are less than $600). They have the same (wide fat) neck that a "real" PRS has (that might or might not be a good thing for you) they do have decent hardware and even the PRS P-90's aren't bad...to be honest most of the ones I have played didn't even need any fret work...killer value guitars.

I'm selling my PRS Soapbar II SE on EBay right now.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

I'm a big P90 fan myself (my #1 guitar is my R0 LP Special DC in TV Yellow ;) )

Here's my recommendations:

1) play as many Gibson LP Juniors as you can in the store until you find one that really sings and is constructed right

2) buy a used Hamer P90 Special... I've yet to play a bad sounding Hamer... absolutely phenomenal guitars especially for the price.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

Does it have to be a double cut TO?

I am partial to singlecut Specials and Jr's. 80's and 90's ones are always available in your price range. The new Melody Makers are a blast and are all over eBay for $300-350. Put a Jr. guard on and drop a vintage Tele or a lipstick tube neck in a for a badass funky guitar. They are very light since they are spanish cedar not mahogany but they sound really cool.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

Thanx for all the great comments & ideas.

The ones that I like the LOOK of the most are the Hamer and Godin.
Tonally, I can vouch for the vintage Les Paul Jr's.

I'm going to start playing some new P90-loaded guitars this week.

Thanx for the tips, Wattage!

I'm not married to the idea of a double cut, tho overall I prefer the look.
I will probably NEVER use the guitar live, but I can defintely see myself using it on the next album.

Well if you just want to use it for recording you can always use mine. I need to get my butt in there and hook up with you anyway.

P90s rock bro...heavy as hell if ya want them to be with that snarl/bite you mentioned and great dynamics (same with mini's). They are just FUN to play.

I've been getting some mild GAS for one lately myself.

I'd go with a Musicians Friend LP Jr, or Hamer myself. There was/is a nice Hamer Goldtop like Curly's on ebay yesterday...price was good, and Hamer's are tough to beat.

Oh and Edwards has some cool Goldtop P90 Paulas and Juniors. www.katanaguitars.com

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

TO - what about an SG jr? It's an SG with a single P90 in the bridge.

they look better then Godin's and PRS'.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, bros. We all know Ben's just going to take the neck off, put a reverse hockey stick on it, paint a METAL graphic on the front, and drop in a Miracle Man. You can take the man out of the METAL, but you can't the METAL out of the man. :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

Ben just hasn't faced up to the fact, that what he really wants, is a real true blue Les Paul. He knows his life will be incomplete without one.

Ben, the first step of recovery is admitting you have a problem. I'm so proud of you.

Re: P-90s ... whoa! (Les Paul Content)

you got the quote wrong...

you can take the man out of the 80's, but cant take the 80's out of the man!

OBSERVATION QUIZ: How many guitar/metal objects can you see on the walls behind me?

Hmm we got the Zakk Wylde pic with the 2 LP bodies

There's the Fulltone sticker

A possible 8X10 of Ozzy (it's blurred so I definatly could be wrong)

As for metal objects well.
- Stapler
- Desk
- File Storage

That's what stands out
