p-bass custom wiring question

hi folks. new to the list and new owner of a couple sd basslines pickups.

i just bought a used copy of a fender p-bass, with two sets of pickups in it, rather than the stock split single pickup. i've been making some upgrades to it, and even though the pickups sounded ok, i chose to buy the basslines spb-1 & spb-3 as the older pickup's wiring was very fragile and i didn't want to have them fail on me during a show. i haven't yet wired up the new pickups because i'm waiting on some cloth wiring, which should be coming tomorrow, but i've noticed that the volume control for the "neck" pickup doesn't seem to have any effect, though the bridge volume control will shut the sound down completely. the tone control works fine.

i made a diagram of the existing wiring layout and compared it to a few p-bass wiring schematics i have, including the one that came with my new sd pickups. what i noticed was that this bass was wired nearly identical with the jazz bass diagram on the other side of the same sd pickup sheet.

i ordered new pots and a new cap as well and will change everything when i do this, but i want to know if wiring this up according to the jazz bass wiring will make this work properly, or if there's some other way?

thanks in advance.

Re: p-bass custom wiring question

You should be able to wire the 2 SD P bass pickups directly to the volume pots just like a Jazz bass with no problems.

Sounds like you have a bad pot or connection for the neck pickup.
