P/J combo for Ibanez RoadstarII bass

Hello all,

Just picked up an old 80's RoadstarII bass cheap. Great build quality. I love the neck, feel, and vibe, but of course the stock PU's and electronics sound like s**t. Very hot output, but no real tone: a lot of bottom, thin high end and generally mushy allaround. I think it could sound killer if I drop in some Basslines and replace the pots and wiring.

While keeping it passive, I'd like a good, versatile, combo of sounds: old-school rock, new country, and a decent slap sound.

I'm thinking Quarter-Pounder for the P (neck), and Hot Jazz in the bridge.
Would I need to get the Stacked Hot Jazz to be able to solo the bridge P/U with no noise?

Seems like a very knowledgable group here. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated!

Thanks

that actually would be a very good idea, but I think you may be mis-led on the hot-jazz pickup. Instead of sounding "hot" with a ton of output and treble, it's actually got tons of extra bass to it, which evens out with the QTR-PNDR p-bass' extra high-end. But if you want two hot, trebly pickups, you need dual QTR-PNDR's

Always interesting to run into another Roadstar owner (mine was just a P-style 'til I added the MusicMan pickup).

I, too, recommend the Quarter Pound P-bass. I can't say anything about the J-pickups since I've never tried them, though if I were to have a P-J bass then I'd probably go with the stack; otherwise you'd always have noise unless the J were all the way off.

Thanks for the input.
Looks like the QuarterPound P and the Stacked Jazz is the ticket.
Anybody else got any experiience with this kind of mod?
Michael
