P-Rail internal wiring

I finally got some P-Rails and I'm getting ready to put 'em in. I have a non-standard set-up (DPDT on/off/on switch, Fender S-1 switch, One vol, one tone) but I have a lovely diagram that Hermetico did for me last winter. I am just a little confused about one point though.

When using a standard wiring set-up, are the coils of a P-Rail (or any humbucker) wired in series or parallel?

Thanks,

Joelster

Re: P-Rail internal wiring

You are free to try either. The standard SD instructions are for series connection to achieve a humbucker-like sound.

I have never had the opportunity to try a P-Rails with its coils connected in parallel. I have no idea how that sounds. Somebody on the forum has probably tried it and could post on the subject.

The combination that I would most like to try is two Rail coils in series, in phase. That ought to have a whiff of the Brian May sound about it.

I actually like the parallel sound better on my p-rails. In series, the bridge pickup is way too hot for my tastes. Putting it in parallel evened it out a lot.

It sounds a lot like the P90 (which I love), only without the hum.

The page on the main site says parallel gives you a more P.A.F.-like tone, but I'd need to hear it for myself.

When my Warmoth arrives and I wire it all up, I'll be able to try this out. I'm putting in P-rails with tripleshots and a push-pull to put the pickups in series.

Brian May sound is awesome :D

Re: P-Rail internal wiring

Cool... I actually have this thing set up with fender S-1 switch so that I can toggle between series and parallel on the P-Rails. I just finished putting it all back together and it works! That, combined with mini toggle and a 5-way (H-S-H) and I've got 20 possible configurations. Oh, yeah... this thing also has a piezo bridge with an internal pre-amp (41 combinations???).

I'm trying to see how complicated a guitar can be before it becomes impossible to play it onstage...

Piezo bridge eh? what make did you get? I'm putting the Fishman one into my Warmoth

Re: P-Rail internal wiring

It's the Graphtech Ghost. It has graphite strat saddles. It also allows for the addition of a midi interface which I thought I would do later but now I don't know if I still wanna go there...
